bullet John Peter MEAMBER(1) was born on 1 Nov 1829 in Metz, Alsace Lorraine, France. John emigrated with his parents to the United States, settling in St. Louis, MO. after a few years they moved to St. Claire County, IL, where John worked on the farm in the summer and went to school in the winter. In 1850, in company with his brother "Gus" and others, he crossed the plains to California, arriving in Placerville on July 8th 1850. After spending a few months in the mines he took sick and returned by boat to his home. After remaining in the east about three years he again went to California, crossing the plains a second time. This time he located in Scott Valley on the place now owned by Charles Hammond, and remained there for one year. In 1854, he moved to the place where he died. He had 320 acres of land well adapted to grazing and growing grain. John was a member of the Fort Jones Lodge No. 115 Independant Order of the Odd Fellows. In 1862, he took a prospecting trip to Idaho, and another time went with a pack train into Bannock County. Both expiditions were disastrous to his interests. At first John said he had nothing to lose, but the 2nd time, he had lost it all. He was now fully determined to abandon mining and pursue his business on the farm, in connection with which he operates a dairy of thrity cows, gathering 5,000 pounds of butter annually whihc he sells to the mines close by. He died on 29 Oct 1917 in Fort Jones, Siskiyou, California. He was buried in Fort Jones, Siskiyou, California. Buried in Fort Jones Cemetary.
