Joe did not have a steady job, he was afraid someone would take Julius away so he took to the railroad tracks. They spent alot of time in the wilderness, living in vacant box cars and caves. Joe told his CHildren he was a HoBo when he met Katie. Hobo meaning someone who would work in exchange for food, not to be mistaken with a Bum.

Joe met Katie near Fredrickstown, MO. Joe stopped to ask a Doctor for some food in exchange for some food. ( the Doctor who raised Katie) The Doctors wife had him split a pile of wood and gave him a sack of food.Katie watched him through the kitchen window, and knew he was for her.
