According to Jean Paton Sale, he went to the banker and said "I'm doing the best I can. If that's not good enough then just take the farms." The bank then left him alone. However, another version of the story is remembered by Gary Sale, his great-grandson. In this version, William puts on his best suit and takes his gun with him to the bank. He places the gun on the desk and says," I'm doing the best I can. If that's not good enough then you'll have to take the farms. But first I'm going to shoot you and then myself."

Elmer Sale wrote the following recollection:"He was a big man, 275 pounds or more. My folks always said I favored him although I never did get as big as he was. He lived most , if not all his life near Peru. He had three farms north of Peru. One on each side of what is now Highway 80 at the intersection with a road called Plank Road and one further north. He sold a portion of his farms for the interchange and a truckstop. Rumors were that he made considerable on that deal. Uncle Bill...and his wife Polly, and Uncle Willie, mothers brother, and his wife Anna, came out to Iowa several times. I remember the good times they and my folks had. Lots of Laughter. I was too young to know what was so funny. I liked Uncle Bill. He usually had a nickel or a dime for me."
