At the time of his departure his mother gave him the following handwritten note:

gehen. Nicht überglücklich nur zufrieden,
Und hoffnungsvoll und heiter sein,
Geachtet von den Edlern hienieden,
Geliebt von Freunden ohne Schein,
Dies Loos ist guten Sterblichen beschieden,
Und dieses schöne Loos sei dein.

Zur Erinnerung von deiner
Perlach den 6. April liebende Mutter
1867 Apolonia Sale

It translates as follows:

Beautiful is the evening of life when you are conscious of
having lived it nobly.
Dear Fritz,

Take the and
________ perhaps
aside forever

The day draws near, when you will take leave from me, lay
your eyes on God at such time, in happy and sad days and
moments, when dangers assail you, then the guardian angel
will always give you protection and divine blessings will be
yours.
Love rather quiet than thunderous joys, bear adversity of
human life with courage and fortitude. Take heed to keep
honor blameless, then all will be well with you.
Not super-happy, only satisfied,
And harbor a hopeful and cheerful disposition,
Respected by high-minded peers,
Loved by friends without pretense.
This lot is granted to good ordinary people
And may this happy fate be yours

To your remembrance from your

He also received and kept a similar note form a brother (half-brother?) Edward Bäck.

Noch fühl ich eine stille Zähre
Die dir ein trübes Auge weint
Sie fliest der Menschlichkeit zur Ehre
Dir starck durch Bruderliebe uns vereint
Wirst du davon einst dir Regung lesen
Die jetzt mein Herz beim Abschied schrieb
So denke, daß, der dies gewesen
Ein Bruder dir war und ewig bliebt.

Gewidmet
von deinem dich liebenden
Bruder
Edward Bäck

Perlach, den 5. April
1867

It translates as:

I still feel a quiet tear
Which my sad eye devotes to you.
It flows to the honor of human nature
Which unites us strongly in brotherly love.
Will you glean from it some day a stirring
Which my heart wrote at our parting.
Then think, that, he who had been
This to you was a brother and remained it forever.

Dedicated
to you from your loving
brother
Edward Bäck
