6. Wolfgang GREINER
was born on
9 Oct 1825 in Pförring, Bavaria. He resided in 1840 in Tegernbach, Bavaria.
He resided Nr. 3 "Heiswebber" (today known as Ilmweg 12) about 1860
in Hettenshausen, Bavaria. He was a weaver before 1867 in Hettenshausen, Bavaria.
He immigrated in 1867.(31) Arrived in
New York on September 10, 1867 aboard the "Malta" which had embarked
from Liverpool and Queenstown with wife, Barbara, and children Barbara and Ignaz.
They came with all their belongings in a wooden trunk. (Shirley Lottenbach has
this trunk and 3 pieces of the family china from Bavaria) They settled in Sublet,
Il and then settled on a farm near Peru, Il. He appeared on the census in 1870
in LaSalle County. It shows his occupation as a lumber yard worker. He was
naturalized on 9 Oct 1876 in Ottawa, Illinois. He is listed at the LaSalle County
City Court in Ottawa in Book (A) 1, page 51; #1688985, item 3. He was a plow
factory worker in 1877 in Peru Plow and Wheel Factory. This is according to
"1877 Past and Present La Salle County" - LaSalle County Genealogical
Society. He Promissory note on 10 Nov 1893 in Peru, IL.
(32) Wolfgang assumed financial liability for Jos. Greiner land lease.
He owned personal property in 1898 in Dimmick Twnshp./ LaSalle County.
(33) In a Bill of Sale dated March 23, 1898,
Wolfgang sells all personal property to son William with whom he resided after
the death of Barbara. He appeared on the census in 1900 in Illinois. This census
shows Wolfgang living with son William. He died on 11 Jan 1902 in Peru, IL.
(34) According to death certificate - primary
couse of death was "old age"; associated disease was "uephritis
for 2yrs/3mo"; time of death 3:00am; his usual occupation - "farmer".
He was buried on 13 Jan 1902 in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery - Peru, IL.
(34) Section 2-A; Lot 50. Records indicate
that there were 12 children, 9 of whom survived. One child is known to have been
born and died in Germany; the other two are not known of. He was married to
Barbara KUFNER on 20 Feb 1860 in Hettenshausen, Bavaria.
(35) Another communication from Dr. Radlinger cites February 6 as

KUFNER
was born on
30 Nov 1841 in Hettenshausen, Bavaria.(36)
Reinhard Mayer of Trostberg, Germany, a genealogist, located her birthplace
while Shirley Greiner Lottenbach and Martha Greiner Collins were vacationing
in Germany in September 1996. Headstone in St. Joseph's cemetery cites birth
as November 3. However, researsh done by Dr. Christine Radlinger of Munich states
that the birthdate was November 30, 1841 - based on the church records in Ilmmunster,
Germany. This date is confirmed by the funeral card which states in German that
she died on November 4, 1893 at the age of 51 years, 11 months, 4 days. She
immigrated in 1867. She arrived in New York on September 10, 1867 on the "Malta"
which embarked from Liverpool and Queenstown with husband, Wolfgang and children
Barbara and Ignaz. She died on 4 Nov 1893 in Peru, IL.
(8)(36) She died suddenly on
the street in Peru with sons Adolph and Ed at her side. They were reportedly
delivering eggs and milk. It is assumed to have been a heart attack.
The funeral card has the following (transl. by Karl Lottenbach):
"With tears in our eyes, we lay you down
in your quiet sleep.
Never again will you return to us
That's why we cry.
Although the clock will ring the hour
we will see each other again
When we stand together
in front of the Lord's throne."
She was buried in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery - Peru, IL. Section 2-A; Lot
50. She was also known as Kuftner/ Coffner/ Kuflar surname. Kuftner - on Ignaz's
marriage license. Kufner - on Edward's birth certificate. Coffner - on Adolph's
birth cetificate. Kuflar - in Frances' obituary. Children were:
i. Barbara
GREINER was born on 10 Dec 1860 in Hettenshausen, Bavaria. Reinhard Mayer,
genealogist from Trostberg, Germany found her birthplace. Records are at Ilmunster,
Germany 2 km away. Dr. Christine Radlinger, Viktoriastrasse 21, 80803 Munich,
Germany researched and found the Greiner/Kufner Family - including the births
of Barbara and Ignaz. She immigrated in 1867. Arrived in New York on September
10, 1867 aboard the "Malta" which embarked from Liverpool, Queenstown
with parents and brother Ignaz. She appeared on the census in 1880 in LaSalle
County. The census lists Ludwig Leittl, Barbara (Greiner) Leittl, and child
Anna immediately below Wolfgang and Barbara Greiner's names, indicating that
they lived next door to each other. It also states that Anna was 8 months old.
She died on 15 Feb 1942 in Peru, IL. She died at the home of her son, Edwin
Leittl - 1921 9th St. Peru, Il. Obituary states she is survived by 7 children.
and preceded in death by 3 children - William, Fred and Pauline. She was buried
on 17 Feb 1942 in St. Vincent's Cemetery in LaSalle?. The obituary stated burial
to be in St. Joseph's but there is no record of that with the cemetery.

William GREINER was born on 4 Mar 1862 in Bavaria, Germany. He died on 4
Mar 1862 in Bavaria, Germany. Estimated date of birth and death. We know a child
"William" was born and died in Germany but we do not know the actual
dates.

Ignaz Wolfgang GREINER was born on 2 Jul 1865 in Hettenshausen, Bavaria,
Germany. Birthdate verified by Dr. Christine Radlinger, Munich, Germany. He
immigrated in 1867. He arrived in New York on September 10, 1867 aboard the
"Malta" which embarked from Liverpool and Queenstown with his parents
and his sister Barbara. He appeared on the census in 1880 in LaSalle County.
He is listed as "Dicknatz", age 15. He resided Story County, Iowa
from 1906.(37) He appeared on the census
in 1915 in Iowa. It states he had resided in Iowa for 9 years; therefore he
would have moved about 1906 (four years after his father's death). He died on
24 Apr 1939 in Colo, Iowa. He appeared on the census 1910 US Census. This census
shows Ignaz, Mary, Golly and Ignaz's brother Edward (and wife, Hilma) living
in same household in New Albany Township, Iowa. He was buried in State Center,
Iowa. He was buried in the cemetery on north edge of town. He was also known
as Ignatz/ Ignatius. Helen Greiner Wolken said Ignaz' middle name was Wolfgang.
She also said that he was the first Greiner to move to Iowa. Shirley Watts Tomaszewski
relates that land in Illinois was hard to rent or buy. Land agents often came
through to offer land in Iowa, Kansas, and Nebraska. The Greiners went to Iowa
for the land which was available and cheaper.

Joseph GREINER was born on 27 Feb 1868 in Peru, IL.
(1) He was the first Greiner child born in the US. His mother would
have been pregnant with him on board ship. (Parents arrived in NY on Sept 10,
1867). Feb 26 is date in church records for birth with baptism on Feb 27; other
records cite Feb 27 for birthdate. His godparents were Joseph and Anna Maria
Huebsch. He appeared on the census in 1880 in LaSalle County. The census cites
Joseph, age 12. He was a worker at Peru Plow & Wheel Co between 1901 and
1941 in Peru, IL. He resided 2028 - 9th Street in 1910 in Peru, IL. He died
on 5 Jan 1946 in Peru, IL. He died at home. He had been in failing health since
May of the preceding year. He was buried on 8 Jan 1946 in Peru City Cemetery.
Services were held in Weerts Chapel, Rev. W.C. Liefeld, pastor of St.John's
Lutheran Church, officiating. He was also known as Joe.
v. William
GREINER Sr. was born on 26 Feb 1870 in Peru, IL. He resided before 1911
in Peru, IL. His father, Wolfgang, lived with him and his wife after death of
Barbara. He resided Story County, Iowa from 1911.
(37) He died on 19 Feb 1951 in State Center, Iowa. He died following
a stroke and a 2 week hospitalization in Woods Hospital. He was buried on 22
Feb 1951 in Hillside Cemetery - State Center, Iowa. North side of town. Second
drive, inside curve to the right. He was also known as Bill.

Ludwig (Louis) GREINER was born on 20 Sep 1872 in Peru, IL. He appeared
on the census in 1880 in LaSalle County. It shows "Ludwig", age 8.
He resided Iowa after 1915. He died on 28 May 1956 in Colo, Iowa. He was buried
on 31 May 1956 in Catholic Cemetery - Colo, Iowa. He is buried to the right
of the large center statue in the cemetery. He was also known as Louie. He
cared for his youngest brother, Adolph, after their mother died in 1893.The 1910
census does not show him living in Peru township, LaSalle county. He must have
been living in Bureau county at the time. He was the last Greiner to move to
Iowa.He moved after 1915 (not included in 1915 Iowa census). Funeral card lists
him as "Louis" which is the name everyone knew him by.

Franciska (Frances) GREINER(38) was
born on 10 Oct 1874 in Peru, IL. She was baptized on 6 Dec 1874 in Peru, IL.
(1) She appeared on the census in 1880 in LaSalle
County. It shows a "Franciska", age 5. She appeared on the census
in 1910 in Iowa. They were living in New Albany Township. They also lived a
while north of Nevada, Iowa. She appeared on the census in 1915 in Iowa.
(37) This census shows Frances and Joe Pfab
living in New Albany township, Story county for the past 4 years; so they must
have come to Story County circa 1911. They lived in Iowa 8 - 10 years, moving
back to Peru, Il c. 1917-1920. She resided 2128 - 5th Street after 1 Jan 1941
in Peru, IL. The home was built by daughter, Elizabeth. Frances lived there
with her daughters Elizabeth and Anna, and her son, William. She died on 15
Jul 1965 in Peru, IL. At time of her death in 1965, she had 17 grandchildren;
46 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by 2 sisters, Barbara and Polly; six brothers Ignatz, William, Joseph,
Louis, Edward and Adolph; two daughters Regina Rittierodt and Bertha; one son
William; 2 grandchildren; and one great grandchild. She was buried in St. Joseph
Catholic Cemetery - Peru, IL. She was also known as Francie.

Edward Arthur GREINER was born on 13 Apr 1882 in Peru, IL. Although always
known as Edward, his birth certificate gives the name Arthur. When his mother
died in 1893, he went to live with Ignaz and Mary Greiner. He was baptized on
28 May 1882 in Peru, IL.(1) He appeared
on the census in 1910 in Iowa. He moved to Story county, Iowa about 1906. The
1910 Iowa Census shows Ed and Hilma Greiner living with Ignaz and Mary Greiner
in New Albany township. He resided Story County, Iowa from 1910.
(37) He appeared on the census in 1915 in Iowa. This census shows
him living in Sherman township. He died on 4 Feb 1943 in St. Anthony, Iowa.
He was buried on 7 Feb 1943 in State Center, Iowa. His grave is in Hillside
Cemetery on north side of State Center. First drive, on first left curve under
trees. Hilma's grave is also there. He was also known as Ed. His birth certificate
lists him as "Arthur" according to Shirley Greiner Lottenbach.
x. Adolph
GREINER was born on 20 Jun 1883 in Peru, IL. He was baptized on 4 Aug 1883
in Peru, IL.(1) He appeared on the census
in 1900 in Bureau County. It shows him living with his brother, Louis, and sister-in-law,
Mayme. He resided Story County, Iowa from 1910.
(37) He lived with his brother Edward. "Adolph (my dad) said
that he lived with his brothers and/or worked for them until he married in 1920"
- Shirley Greiner Lottenbach. He appeared on the census in 1915 in Iowa. It
shows him living with Ed and Hilma in Sherman township with 5 years residency
in Iowa; therefore, he must have come to Iowa about 1910 (with Edward and Hilma).
Lillie Greiner Edler confirms that Adolph was living with Ed at the time he married
in 1920. He died on 5 Mar 1956 in Nevada, Iowa. He was buried on 7 Mar 1956
in Nevada, Iowa. Cause of death was cancer. |
