bullet John McClay Coe was born on Nov 19 1857 in Gadsden County, Florida. He died on Sep 25 1915 in Pensacola , Escambia, Florida. He was buried about Sep 28 1915 in St. John's Cemetery, Pensacola, Florida. Orphaned at Manatee at about age eight, he was taken by his uncle, Will McClay, to Quincy. Said to have been a fine young man, he later lived in Pensacola, Florida, where he worked as a stevedore. Later manager of the Pensacola Opera House, he founded Coe's Bookstore of Pensacola and was senior partner in the book and stationery enterprise of Dow and Coe. One of Pensacola's most merchants, in 1902 he took into partnership Charles W. Lamar, later president of the American National Bank of Pensacola, and founded Pensacola Amusement Company , which operated the Opera House, and Pensacola Advertising Company, a poster business. After deciding to dissolve the partnership in 1908, a flip of the coin gave the poster company to Lamar. Consdered a stroke of luck by Coe, multimillion dollar Lamar Outdoor Advertising is now one of the largest logo sign companies in the United
States.

Of sterling business and moral qualities, Coe died in Pensacola September 25, 1919. Burial was at St. John's Cemetery.
