While burning a tar kiln they were attacked by Indians (perhaps in the massacre of 1711) and Roger was de-capitated. Evan escaped. lived, and later died and was buried on his plantation on Clubfoot and Hancock Creeks, on the south side of the Neuse River, 20 miles below New Bern.
