bullet Marion Lorraine Kervin (Private). Parents: Edward James Kervin and Ann (n) Stenson.

She was married to LCDR Thomas William Saltmarsh Jr. USN (Ret) on Feb 18 1946 in Ottumwa, Wapello, Iowa. Marion Lorraine Kervin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward James Kervin of Ottumwa, Iowa and Lieutenant junior grade Thomas William Saltmarsh, Jr., United States Navy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas William Saltmarsh of Pensacola, Florida were joined together in holy matrimony at a Nuptial Mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Church ( a beautiful cathedral church) in downtown Ottumwa on Monday, February eighteenth, in the year of our lord one thousand nine hundred and forty six at nine o’clock in the morning. The Most Reverend Monsignor Walsh performed the ceremony. A wedding breakfast in the ballroom of the Hotel Ottumwa followed the ceremony one hour later.
Fifty years later Marion and Bill celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. To commemorate this special event their eight children, the seven children’s spouses and the fifteen grandchildren invited many of Marion and Bill’s other relatives and many of their friends to join them at a special dinner party in their honor. To accommodate out-of-town guests Saturday, February 17, was chosen as the day of the party. Marion’s sister Irene Rogers was Maid-of-Honor at the wedding. Besides Marion and Bill, Irene was the only other person at the wedding in Ottumwa present at the party. Irene attended the party along with her daughter, Mary Pat with husband Jim Kutschke, and her daughter Bobbi Flynn. Other relatives were Molly Watson, Step-Grandchildren Chris and his wife Mandy Sullivan, and Shawn Sullivan, both sons of Randy Sullivan, Terry’s husband. Besides the 39 relatives mentioned above, thirty five friends came to the party, making a total of 74. The site of the party was the Party Room at Skopelos By The Bay. Besides a sit down dinner for 74 people, there was an open bar throughout the evening, and a band which played softly the big band melodies and other tunes of the forties era. The dinner consisted of a salad, a selection from a menu of five items. Served with the entrees were a stuffed baked potato and a vegetable of snow peas. Wine was served with the meal. Family note:
TEARS OF JOY by Ann Elizabeth Saltmarsh (Jones) (Dallmann)
Daddy turned 75 this summer and all of his eight children, their spouses, 16 ½ grandchildren, and his first great grandchild gathered at the Days Inn at Cocoa Beach, Florida for a birthday party and reunion. We created a small show for him, as we had done as kids growing up, followed by the presentation of an album that held a personal expression of love from each of us. As we read the proverb, "Your children are the jewels in your crown", my father put his face in his hands and wept. They were happy tears, very different from that time long ago at the only other time I've seen him cry.

I had just turned fifteen, and my youngest sister, Terry, was six days old. Momma had seemed very pale and lifeless as we had ice cream and cake, and I worried just a bit about her as I excitedly received the radio I had wanted so badly. My worst fears came true. Momma was rushed for emergency surgery and for three days she seemed to hang in that precarious balance between life and death. With eight children at home, Daddy made me solely responsible for Terry and Patty, the next oldest, to be in charge of chores like cleaning.

I remember standing beneath the crucifix in my parent's room which hung over the bassinet that we had all slept in for the first few weeks. I prayed out loud as I held my tiny, sleeping sister, " Please, God, don't make me a mother. I'm only fifteen."

Suddenly, my thoughts were interrupted by Patty saying, "Ann, Daddy made stew for dinner." I was holding Terry as I tried to serve what appeared to be a concoction that resembled concrete although no one said a word. It was than that I heard the sound of my father's crying. It seemed to echo the loneliness in each of us, and I will never forget my total fear.

We often reminisce about that story reminding the younger children that our family gained its strength from that time. We came to value Momma even more after her recovery and realized the deep love that my parents had for each other. It is Daddy who is very ill and time is slipping away for him, but I cherish the times I do have to share with this wonderful man, my father.
