bullet Sarah Loggan was born on Feb 27 1877 in Salem, Virginia. She died on Apr 26 1960 in Pensacola , Escambia, Florida. She was buried about Apr 29 1960 in St.Michael's Cemetery, Pensacola, Escambia, Florida. World War I was on the horizon when Sarah was elected the first chairwoman of the Pensacola Chapter of the American Red Cross. It was in full swing when Army wives at Fort Barrancas called a meeting to discuss a local chapter. The Thursday afternoon meeting was at the San Carlos Hotel, called by the wife of the commanding officer of the Army Coast Defenses. Also signing the petition was the wife of the commanding officer of the Navy Yard. Kennedy, whose husband was a public health surgeon, was elected chairwoman at the first "official" meeting on March 5, 1917, the date the charter was signed.

Sarah received her education in Virginia and, when still a young woman, she met and married a college student from New Orleans, Steven Russell Mallory Kennedy, who was attending Roanoke College and had long ties to Pensacola. After their marriage they moved to New Orleans where Stephen graduated from Tulane Medical School in 1903. After he received his medical degree they moved to Pensacola and lived on North Hill. About 1909 they moved to their bay front home on the Scenic Highway. There they raised their young son, Tom. The area where they lived became Mallory Heights.

The early list of Red Cross membership reads like a list of "who's who" in early Pensacola, men and women. Sarah went to Jacksonville to train to be the Home Service executive director and served as that for several years. Home Service is now known as Service to Military Families and Veterans and is a vital part of a local Red Cross chapter.

Sarah resigned from the Red Cross in July 1925, but returned to an active role during World War II. At that time she was part of the 'production department", meaning she rolled bandages and performed other chores related to war service. She often took along her daughter in law, the former Frankie May Juedevine, and teen age grand-daughter, now Sally Turner, to introduce them to Red Cross work. This was before the the days of the Community Chest/United Fund and a chapter had to raise it's operating money. Sarah Kennedy's leadership included providing money for the operating the chapter and organizing a fund drive. Kennedy's literary club, the Nomads, contributed $25 as did other groups. The finance committee included such well-known names as William Fisher, W. A. Blount, P. K. Young and John Merritt. By Christmas, membership had grown to nearly 3000. Many activities were used to raise money, including street tags and a Red Cross dance.

For a time Sarah Kennedy and her son, Tom, operated the Cherokee Tea Room in their bayfront home. When used as a tea room, the long front porch was often filled with young flight students. It's believed the tea room closed in the early 1930's according to granddaughter, Sally Kennedy Turner.
