Pensacola News-Journal May 29, 1999 Confederate Navy Secretary called Pensacola home By Mary Dawkins News Journal correspondent Stephen Russell Mallory was born on the Island of Trinidad off the northern coast of South America in 1812 and in later life made Pensacola his home. Mallory, who served as a U.S. Senator and later as Secretary of the Navy for the Confederacy, married a Pensacola woman, Angela Moreno, and is the ancestor of numerous modern-day Pensacola residents. One biography says Mallory attended a school on Mobile Bay while others have- claimed he went to Spring Hill. He also attended a school for boys in Pennsylvania but had no higher education, it said. He became a customs inspector when he was 19. In 1838, Mallory married Moreno in St. Michael Church in Pensacola. We know that the tale of the Mallory's' courtship begins when they saw each other by chance. They did not meet at that time. Angela Moreno was born in Pensacola during the Spanish reign and was a daughter of Francisco Moreno. She was sent to a boarding school in Bridgeport, Conn., when she was about 14. In those days the only way to travel to the east coast from Pensacola was by boat and Angela and her friend stopped off for a few days in Key West. Mallory was on the waterfront that day and caught a glimpse of Angela. He vowed to meet her and made plans to do so. Likewise she thought the young Irishman was dashing. Mallory's cousin was commanding officer at the Navy Yard in Pensacola and two years later, young Stephen came to Pensacola to visit. Mallory asked his cousin's wife to introduce him to Moreno. Four years later they were married. After their marriage, they returned to Key West to live. The Mallory's' years in Key West were good ones. Most of their children were born there, According. to one source at least two children are buried in the Florida Keys. It is not certain just how many children Stephen and Angela had, but only four of them grew to maturity, Margaret, Stephen Jr. (Buddy), Ruby and Attilla. In 1852, Mallory was elected to the U.S. Senate from Florida, but had to resign in 1861 when Florida seceded from the Union. They moved from Washington to Richmond, Va., because he was named Secretary of the Navy for the Confederacy. After the war, they moved to Pensacola. In Pensacola, while Fort Barrancas and the Navy Yard remained with Southern sympathizers, Fort Pickens had been taken over by loyal Union supporters. Believing that Fort Pickens "was not worth one ounce of blood," Mallory and David Yulee, the other Florida senator, negotiated a truce. If the federal forces would not reinforce Pickens, the South would not attack. Unfortunately, when Abraham Lincoln became president, the truce was not honored. Mallory's son Buddy, who never married, was elected a U.S. Senator from Florida in 1896 and served until his death in December 1907. There are numerous descendants in Pensacola. Many have the name Mallory as a first name. Some of the surnames of those who claim Mallory in their ancestry are Kennedy, Pasco, Fisher and Turner. Mallory Street is named for Stephen Mallory and Moreno Street is named for his wife's family. Stephen R. Mallory died on Nov. 9, 1876, and is buried in St. Michael's Cemetery. He has one of the tall monuments in the cemetery over which flies the Stars and Bars of the Confederacy. He also is honored in Lee Square on Palafox Street between Gadsen and Jackson streets.
