Rainey dies at 87 by Carl Wernicke

Probably 17 Oct 1985

Bob Rainey, retired in 1966 after more than 30 years as advertising director of the Pensacola News Journal, died Wednesday night at the age of 87.

Rainey is remembered by his friends and co-workers as a good, decent man, a proficient businessman and a sharp dealer.

Co-worker and friend Pat Donnelly pointed out that Rainey was older than his employers realized when he retired because he "stretched" his age when he was hired.

"He was afraid they would think he was a little too old," Donnelly said. "So he stretched his age a little bit."

Donnelly said Rainey was well known in national advertising circles in his day, and was usually a featured speaker at seminars held by the Perry newspaper chain, which owned the News Journal at that time.

"He was a fine gentleman," he said. "He used to sell ads when they would go out to the grocery stores and bring the ad copy back on the brown paper grocery bags. I went to work for him when I graduated from college in 1960. I got to know him quite well."

Donnelly said Rainey was an early advocate of the use of color in newspaper advertisements.

Barbara Hartsfield was a sales executive for Rainey. She said he was both friend and a boss.

"He was the greatest. You know, just the type person who wasn't just an employer, he was a good friend, would take the time to talk to you. Oh, he cracked the whip--the work had to be done. But you respected someone like that. He gave you more incentive to get the job done."

Dave Johnson, chairman of the board of Fisher Brown Insurance, called Rainey "a decent human being--but you couldn't push him around." He said that although Rainey never had children of his own, he was very much a family man, remaining close to his brother and sister.

"I started to go see him just the other day," Johnson said. "But the day comes and the day goes and you don't get out to see your old friends."

Survivors include his wife, Fidelia Sublette Rainey; his sister Ann Rainey Langley; his brother, Morton J. Rainey; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and are being handled by Waters & Hibbert Funeral Home.
