Olmstead Saltmarsh
was born on
Dec 15 1848 in Windsor, Vermont. He died on Dec 16 1933 in U.S. Marine Base,
Quantico, Virginia. He on Dec 19 1933. Obituary
Death Ends Long Career ERNEST 0. SALTMARSH, assistant to the general man-ager, reached on December l5, the birthday marking his age at 86. The next day he passed away and thus all earthly ac-counts squared. Mr. Saltmarsh was born in Wind-sor, Vt., where after attending the graded and high schools, he entered the Massachusetts Institute of Tech-nology, graduating in the class of 1869. Three years later he entered the service of the Louisville & Nash-ville Railroad Company. He was successively assistant engineer, chief clerk to Major James Geddes, superintendent at Nashville and Russellville from which latter point he was transferred to Pensacola, Fla., as superintendent. In the latter posi-tion he held the collateral titles of general manager of the Gulf Transit Company, and president of the Yel-low River Railroad. Throughout the sturdy frame ran a broad heroic stripe. He refused to leave his post in Pensacola during the yellow fever epidemic of 1882, casting his lot with his fellow citi-zens by assisting in relief measures personally. He himself was stricken with the disease and narrowly escaped death. Another humani-tarian trait in his composition was his consideration for the employees in his charge. As early as 1900 he instituted a c a m p a i g n looking towards the safety of the men on his division. That was 12 years be-fore the organization of the National Safety Council and five years before the movement was taken up by the United States Steel Corporation. That places him in the role of pioneer in this work. To reward his efforts his division was the first ever to pass through an entire month without a reportable injury, 24 years after he had initiated the safety movement among the employees under him. Ill health caused him to relinquish his duties as superintendent on April 16, 1929 and he was appointed as-sistant to the general manager. About two years ago he went to live with his daughter who is the wife of Brigadier General Harry Lee, of the Marine Corps at Quantico, Va., where he died. The remains were sent to Pensa-cola, where . funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, December 19, with burial in St. Michael's Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, one son and one daughter. He was buried on Dec 21 1933 in St. Michael's, Pensacola, Escambia, Florida. He was a Civil Engineer. He graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He had a lifelong career with The Louisville and Nashville Railroad (L&N). He retired after many years as Division Superintendent in the late 1920's. He was the earliest Saltmarsh to live in Pensacola, Florida. He lived at 14 West Belmont Street just a stone's throw from downtown Pensacola. The house had a tower on top from which one could view the city and all the way to Pensacola Beach with binoculars. He was only a few blocks from his pride and joy, the Passenger Terminal on Wright Street. He was in charge when it was built and kept it immaculate. His offices were on the second floor. This building was abandoned and later the Hilton Hotel was built next to it on the North side. It became the lobby of the Hilton and the upstairs rooms were restored to be used for meetings. The main floor was restored and became the Lobby, and also had the 1922 Restaurant and the Umbrella room for more casual dining. The rest of the lower area was made into ballrooms, and party rooms for wedding receptions, conventions and so forth. The Hilton sold out and is now the Grand Hotel. Just south of this hotel was built the Civic Arena which could hold about 12,000 spectators. Here the Ice Pilots play ice hockey, and many concerts and other affairs are held in it. Ernest married Margaret Eveline Brent and they had two children, Thomas William and Henrietta Mercedes. Thomas William (Will) married Susie Roberts Moreno and they had Susie (Susan), Ernest, Bill and Betty. Mercedes married MGEN Harry Lee, USMC and they had Eveline, Little Mercedes, Laura, Harry and Ernest. When Will got married, he and Sue lived with them for about seven years before they bought the property at 422 North Baylen Street and built a smaller home on the adjacent lot. Ernest, Bill and Betty were born in the new house at 416 North Baylen Street. Susan got to know her grandparents since she was born earlier and then Ernest was seven years later, Bill two more years and Betty a little over 2 more years. All the children called their grandparents Bampaya and Nanny. Their house was spacious and there were two cooks, a butler and a yardman, sometimes more for big parties. Breakfast, Dinner and Supper were always quite formal and the food was plentiful and superb. There was always a variety, almost like a fine restaurant. Sue and Will lived in the same block and Mercedes and her family only visited on occasion. Each Sunday Will's family was expected to be at dinner at Nanny's. Bampaya always presided over the table. He had a fine liquor cabinet and always had a little toddy before he ate. One habit he had was that each Sunday he would greet all of us and then, ignoring the girls, would let Ernest reach his hand into his side pants pocket and fill his hand with change as much as he could hold. Then Bill was given from a penny to a dime. Ernest came out with several dollars, Bill maybe a dime and the girls were left out. Ernest was his namesake so he was obviously his favorite. Bill wonders what a psychiatrist would have said about that! Bill later, whenever he travelled on the L&N would always end up with a discussion with conductors, porters and anyone connected to the railroad whenever they heard the name Saltmarsh. They would say to Bill: "Are you Old Man Saltmarsh's grandson?". This would always be followed by a lengthy account of something Bampaya had done. How Bill wishes that tape recorders were available at that time. When Bampaya retired a hat was passed up and down the line and enough money was collected to present him with a brand new Chrysler Sedan. He apparently was well loved and respected. Bill is always impressed at the way people always referred to his grandfather and also his father as having Integrity, which Bill feels is the precise trait that makes a man. If one has Integrity, he must have all the other good traits. Bill never heard a bad word spoken for Will or Bampaya. At one time a shipping company named a new freighter the E.O. Saltmarsh and presented him with an expensive and elaborate model of it encased in a Mahogany trimmed Glass Case, mounted on a mahogany base. It was about three feet long and was precise down to the slightest detail. The fittings were done in German Silver, according to family lore. Ernest II claimed it later and it is in a Maritime Museum in California according to Ernest's daughter, Sara. Parents: Dr. Seth Saltmarsh M.D. and Mary Henrietta Sanford .
