bullet Fidelia Sublette was born on Nov 5 1893 in Pensacola, Escambia, Florida. She died on Jan 12 2000 in Haven of Peace, Pensacola, Escambia, Florida. Taught school in rural northwest areas of Florida, staying with students' families and commuting by train to Pensacola on the weekends. She was a Public Health Nurse. She later worked as a clerk for Judge Maxwell and as an insurance agent for Fisher-Brown Insurance.

Sometime after her husbands death she and Hortensia moved to the Haven of Peace, a nursing home run by Catholic Nuns. She was very vivacious and talkative and loved to tell tales of her younger years. At one time she knew Wallis Warfield who lived with her naval aviator husband nearby and remembers seeing her sitting on a bench across from the San Carlos Hotel. Later King Edward VIII of England abdicated his throne to marry Wallis who in the meantime had become a widow. She rode a stationary bicycle daily at the Haven and was lucid almost to her death at 106 years of age.

She was one of the last surviving grandchildren of don Francisco Moreno. At her death only Calpurnia Sublette Brown and Yvonne Sublette Howson had survived her.

Pensacola News Journal

106-YEAR-OLD RECOUNTED HISTORY THROUGH TALES
by Michelle Mundy* New Journal Staff Writer

Fidelia Sublette Rainey was known for her storytelling ability, said her niece Page Lee.

She often recounted the time her father--a ticket agent for the L&N Railroad--took her to the train station to see Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders' train pass through Pensacola on its way to the Spanish-American War.

She also described the image of Wallis Warfield Simpson sitting on a bench in the little park across from the San Carlos Hotel. Mrs. Rainey met Simpson when she lived in North Hill with her Navy pilot husband. After the couple divorced, King Edward VIII of England abdicated his throne in 1936 to marry the divorcee.

Mrs. Rainey saw a lot of history in her 106 years and although she died on Wednesday, her stories will live on.

"She had a tremendous sense of humor and was a wonderful story-teller and a wonderful writer." said Lee of Pensacola.

Lee said that her aunt's earliest memory was her mother putting a bay on her hip. Being the second oldest daughter in a family of 11, Mrs. Rainey often helped her mom care for her siblings.

"She was like all of our mother's," Lee said.

At 92, Mrs. Rainey was still making a lasting impression on people.

"I was in the back yard planting flowers, and she came bounding out of the back door of her home and stuck out her hand. 'I'm Fi Rainey, you're Bill Godwin and we're related " said Bill Godwin, her North Hill neighbor of 10 years.

Later in the conversation: "We're expecting you for drinks at 5:30 p.m. on Friday." That was on Thursday, I think, so I had to make some cancellations."

Once she passed 100, Mrs. Rainey didn't slow down. Godwin's wife, Bobbi, said she was an inspiration and rode a stationary bike every day.

"She was just as lively as she could be, and she was just lots of fun. I think that was why I was so inspired by her." Godwin said.

Mrs. Rainey is survived by two sisters, Calpurnia Brown of Pensacola and Yvonne Howson of Oakland, Calif, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services are a 9:30 a.m. Monday in St. Michael's Catholic Church.
