CHARLES HILL TURNER, III Charles Hill Turner, III, 59, of Houston, Texas and Pensacola, Florida, died Wednesday, September 6, 2000 in Pensacola in the family home built in 1896 by his grandfather and namesake. The son of Joyce and Billy Dick Turner, Charles is survived by his brother, William Richard Turner, Jr. He was Uncle Charlie to John and Michael, Sons of very special friends, Tina and Dan Sivinski of Houston. An honors graduate of the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, Charles was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, the Charlone Manigault Society and the Order of The Purple. Charles served in the U.S. Navy as Supply Officer on the USS Grant County followed by duty at the Sugply Center of the Washington, D. C. Shipyard where he first became involved with computers which led to his career as a Senior Systems Analyst with Data General Corporation. A life long Episcopalian, Charles was a member of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church in Houston and attended Christ Episcopal Church when he was in Pensacola. Charles, was a two term member of the Associate Vestry of St. Johns, served on the churchs Outreach Committee and Music Committee and was a member of the Board of Directors of LIFE Houston, which provides infant formula in emergencies. He was a Postulant in the Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem, Grand Priory of America. Concurrent memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, September 8, 2000 at Christ Episcopal Church in Pensacola where the clergy will be joined by family friend, the Reverend Sally Monroe Trimble, and in Houston in the Chapel of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, where the homily will be offered by the Reverend, Rayord High, a Sewanee classmate of Charles. Dick served in the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II in the European Theater. After discharge from military service he returned to the family owned business. Dick, along with his father and brother, Filo, ran Pensacola Buggy Works which opened in the late 1800s and stayed in the Turner family until it was sold in 1977. According to Joe Crona, longtime friend and banker, he put a lot of cars on the road, and he and his family were very well known and did a lot of business with the residents of Pensacola. Dick was on avid outdoorsman. Crona said that he and Dick hunted together for 35 years, that Dick was an outstanding competitor and loved to be outside surrounded by the wilderness. Dick was a co-founder of the Pensacola Heritage Society and and the first president of the Citizens of the National Seashore. Parents: Filo Hill Turner Sr. and Fisher.
