Family home on the northwest corner of LaRua and Spring Streets was bought by the F.B.O.E. for the Elks home. Later it became the Training Camp for Pensacola's world champion boxer, Roy Jones, Jr., of Square Ring Incorporated.

Francis Celestino Brent was a member of a Florida pioneer family. His family was here when Florida was only a territory,

Brent was born May 12,1848, fourth child of Thomas William Brent, commandant of Pensacola Navy Yard, and Merced Gonzalez Brent.

According to Francis Brent's obituary, he was a pioneer banker and businessman whose "worth to his community has been recognized throughout his long and useful career."

At 16, Brent enlisted in the Confederate Army and served about a year before returning to Pensacola.

Upon his return, Brent plunged headlong into business, beginning as a clerk in 1873. Reaching a degree of success by 1876, he determined to carry out his original dream and with J. P. Knowles made plans to open a bank. They soon opened under the name of Knowles and Brent, which soon became F.C. Brent and Company.

By 1872 Brent purchased a controlling interest in the First National Bank of Pensacola. This bank became the focus of his growing banking firm and for a time it was the only national bank in town.

Early in 1905, Brent decided to retire to have more time for his invalid wife, who died in December. By then his many other interests were demanding attention. He gave up the presidency of the bank but stayed involved with its operations. In April 1911 he once again became its president.

Brent had many other business- interests that demanded his attention. He was president of the Pensacola Lumber Company, vice president of the Cedar Creek Mill and the Cedar Creek Store Company.

The Brent Building on Palafox and Garden streets was built following a devastating fire on Halloween 1905. Later Brent bought the adjoining seven-story Blount Building.

Offices for many doctors and lawyers were in one of these two buildings during the first half of the century. Harrell's Drug Store, with its soda fountain, was on the ground floor.

Brent also owned an 840-acre farm in what is today the Brent community. At the time Brent Lane was a two-lane dirt road leading to the house.

Brent married Mary Ella Shuttleworth In 1872 and they had 13 children, 12 of whom survived him when Brent died in April 1914. Brent owned a large house at the corner of LaRua and Spring streets that was sold to the Elks to become the Elks Club about 1940.
