Abel B. Sanford, Farmer, Sec. 15; P. O. Adderly; born in Newtown, Fairfield Co., Conn, in 1822; came to Wisconsin in 1841, locating at Waukesha, where he worked on his fathers farm and taught school for five years; in 1846, he moved to Ashippun, where he purchased 120 acres, his present homestead. Mr. Sanford is one of the pioneers of the township, and has been very successful in raising both stock and grain. Married February 27, 1849, Miss Esther Curtis, a native of New Haven Co., Conn.; they have had eight children , five living-David A., the oldest son, graduated at Philadelphia in June 1878, and was ordained at Milwaukee in June 1879, and received charge of the Kemper Mission of Darlington, Wis. Mr. Sanford was, in 1848, Town Clerk; in 1849, Town Treasurer; from 1850-
1857, Town Clerk, in 1866, Town Clerk; 1868-69, Town Clerk, and also Justice of the Peace two years. Democrat.


Abel and Esther's Marriage Certificate indicate they were married by Wessen G. Miller in a religious ceremony. The certificate does not provide names of parents for either.

Abel and Esther are buried in the St. Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetery in Ashippun, Dodge County, Wisconsin along with the following relatives:

The Dodge County Pioneer carried an Obituary on Abel Sanford.

Sanford, Abel, died November 17, 1892, Age 70, resident of Ashippun. Member of the Old Settlers Club, the 1893 Memorial List shows he settled in Dodge County in 1845. Buried in St. Paul's Episcopal Cemetery, town Ashippun, as was his wife Esther E. Sanford who died October 4, 1855, at age 73 and son William A. Sanford who died October 4, 1855, at age 1 year 4 months, 20 days. Mrs. Sanford was a member of the Old Settlers Club, the 1897 memorial list shows she settled in Dodge County in 1849.

A copy of Abel's obituary was received from Sandra Borchardt, wife of George Hubert Borchardt. It is not know which paper carried this version:

Died, at his home in Ashippun, Wis., of pneumonia, on Thursday, November 17, 1892; Abel B. Sanford, in the 71st year of his age. Mr. Sanford was one of the early pioneers of Wisconsin. He was born in Newtown, Conn., January 20th, 1822. He came first with his parents to Otsego Co., N. Y., in 1838, then to Wisconsin in 1841, residing at Waukesha six years, then came to Ashippun. He was married to Miss Esther E. Curtiss of Oxford, Conn., in 1849. The fruit of their union was eight children, three of them having died in childhood. The remaining ones are Rev. D. A. Sanford of Clinton, Mo., A. C. Sanford of Ono, Wis., Charles E. Sanford, Anna M. Sanford and Mrs. Emma Borchardt of Ashippun. All were present at the funeral. Mr. Sanford was one of the early pioneer school teachers of Wisconsin. He has also filled many offices of public trust. Mr. Sanford lived a consistent christian life, and was a pillar in the church to which he belonged. The community have lost a benefactor, the family a kind husband and father. They have the sympathy of the entire community. His funeral was held on Sunday, Nov., 20th, at the Episcopal church in Ashippun, Rev. E. O. Ostenson of Colorado delivering the funeral address.




















Abel Baldwin Sanford was a farmer who was active in his community. He was Town Clerk in 1848, 1849, 1866 and 1869. He was Senior Warden of the Episcopal church in Mapleton.
