page 572, Edward Sewall Sanford, born in Medway, Massachusetts, died at the country home of his son-in-law, N.W.T. Hatch, at Glenholden, near Philadelphia, Sept. 9, 1882, in his sixty-sixth year. His father, a clergyman, belonged to an old New England family. In 1842, Mr. Sanford became an agent in New York for Alvin Adams, of Boston, founder of the express business, and displayed such energy and ability that Adams + Co. selected him to superintend the expansion of their business to Washington. After this task was completed, he was sent as general agent to Philadelphia and soon afterward made general superintendent there. Thereafter, he became one of (p. 572) the recognized powers in the express business, and when, July 1, 1854, The Adams Express Co. was organized, with Alvin Adams as president and William B. Dinsmore as vice-president, Mr. Sanford was given a seat in the small board of directors. In 1867, when Mr. Adams died and Mr. Dinsmore succeeded to the presidency, Mr. Sanford became vice-president, which position he held until his death. At the outbreak of the civil war, Mr. Sanford, then at the head of The American Telegraph Co., was appointed supervisor of military telegraph lines and in this position exercised absolute censorship over all dispatches. After the absorption of his company by The Western Union, he became a director of the latter. he was also a director of The International Ocean Telegraph Co. and had coal mining interests in Nova Scotia. Mr. Sanford was a man of remarkable executive ability, circumspect and correct in all his business relations, and greatly admired for his uprightness of character and kindly disposition. Milton Holbrook Sanford was educated in a military school in Middletown, CT and in Andover and Bradford Academies. His father died when he was seventeen denying him of a college education. He had to pay attention to the large cotten thread mills his father, a man of great mechanical genius, had built up and put into very successful operation.

After a successful career at Medway, MA he sold out and established himself in Boston, MA for the sale of Southern produce. Later he operated a mill in Canton, MA for the manufacture of a strong cotton fabric much in use on southern plantations. Ten years later he bought a small mill for cotton weaving at Southboro, MA which he greatly enlarged. The village that sprang up about this mill he named Cordaville in honor of his wife. His mills were shut down for a short period of time at the beginning of the Civil War. The mills were adapted to making woolen blankets that were sold to the government for army use during the Civil War.

After the Civil War, having amassed a great fortune, he devoted his time to the management of his wealth and the breeding and training of fine horses. He had stock farms in New Jersey and Kentucky. His connection with the turf dates back to the opening of Jerome Park in 1866. He was the first man to join L. W. Jerome in the formation of the American Jockey Club. His most famous horses were Loadstone, LaPolka, Niagara, Madame Dudley, Preakness, etal. which made his name famous in the racing world.
