3. Anton SCHETTLER
. Dearest Brother and Sister-in-law!
I want you to know that we are all well and quite content. It has saddened us
that the Lord has taken our Father from amidst us. We shall hope that he is
in Heaven with our Lord the Almighty. He passed away September 29th and was
laid to rest on October 2nd. We have mailed a letter to you on October 2nd,
which you obviously have not received. Our little sons is Johann Heinrich
Franz. He is healthy little boy and can already stand us and by spring he can
probably walk. My dear Father was his Godfather and Mari Anna Kohnen is his
Godmother. We have three cows, one ox, 1 calf, one pregnant pig, 7 sheep and
4 geese. Three of he geese have hatched 32 goslings, one still sits on 8 eggs.
We have 18 chickens, eggs are 3 for one Groschen, a pound of butter costs 7
Groschen. Bacon is also 7 groschen per pound. Cows are expensive here, a good
cow costs 50 to 60 Taler. A six-week-pig costs 6 Taler. Rye is 1 Taler, wheat
1 Taler and potatoes are ½ Taler per bushel. The harvest was good last
year. This past winter was very mild, we hardly had any frost. End of November
there were two feet of snow which stayed on the ground for 2 weeks, after that
there was hardly any winter at all. Sonnemanns people are all well. Leonard
and Clemens Essmann and Wilmering in Haselunne and Kohnen are also well and quite
content. Now I do not know anymore news to report, other than we are all healthy.
Our son was born on July 7th at 8 o'clock in the evening. He received the holy
sacrament of baptism on July 8th.
