He died on 13 Aug 1961 in Oklahoma City Oklahoma. Henry B. Schettler, 89,
Sterling, OK died Sunday in an Oklahoma City rest home. Rosary will be said
at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Dalton Funeral home chapel with Rev. Cletus Bash, minister
of Our Lady of Perpetual Catholic Church, Sterling, officiating. Mass will
be at 9 a.m. in the Sterling church with Rev. Charles H. Schettler, Mr. Schettler's
grandson, reading. Burial will be in the Sterling Catholic cemetary.
Mr. Schettler was born June 2, 1872 in Breda, Iowa. A retired farmer and builder,
he had been a resident of Commanche sounty since 1903 coming here from southern
Minnesota. He was a count commissioner of eastern district from 1920 to 1924.
His wife, Elizabeth died in 1941.
He is survived by a daughter, Mr. Anna Starke, Texas; six sons, Albert and Ed
& William, Stering; Lawrence, OKlahoma City; Herman, St. Paul, Kansas and
Anthony, Point Reyes, California; one brother, Frank, Larchwood, Iowa; one sister,
Mrs. Anna Thiele, Sibley, Iowa; 44 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren.
Pall bearers were Leonard, Kenneth and Paul Schettler, Tim and Marvin conway
and Joe Starke, Jr. Henry Schettler was born June 2, 1872, married Elizabeth
Althoff born August 1, 1877. They first settled near Little Rock, Iowa. They
then moved to Sterling, Oklahoma area where they lived most of their married
life. Henry passed away August 13, 1961 and Elizabeth in March, 1941. Elizabeth
passed away with tuberculosis. She took care of her daughter, Clara, who passed
away in 1935 after a long struggle with tuberculosis.
Their children were William 1898 (Fletcher, OK) Anna 1900 deceased (Joe Starke)
Muenster, Texas, Clara Conway 1902 deceased, Lawrence 1904 deceased, Herman
1906 St. Paul, Kansas, Edward 1906 deceased, Albert 1911 Elgin, OK and Anthony
1913 Petaluma, CA. Father Charles Schettler, William Schettler's son, is the
Chancellor of the Diocese of Oklahoma City and Tulsa, OK.
He was married to Elizabeth ALTHOFF (daughter of Christopher
ALTHOFF and Maria "Sophia" Luchtel ALTHOFF) UNKNOWN
in Iowa. They lived near Little Rock, Iowa, and near Wilmont, Minnesota before
moving to Sterling, OK.
1880 Census for Carroll County, Wheatland TWP indicates she was born in Iowa.
Elizabeth ALTHOFF was born on 1 Aug 1877 in Breda,
Carrol County, Iowa. She died on 2 Mar 1941 in Sterling, Oklahoma. She died
form Tuberculosis Elizabeth's parent were Christopher Althoff and Sophie Luchtel,
Christopher Althoff was born at Florsheim, near Frankfort, Germany on June 25,
1852, a son of William and Mary Althoff. Christopher came to America with his
younger brother, Henry when he was 21 years old. He came to Carroll County,
Iowa. Two years later, he married Sophie Luchtel. They had two children, Elizabeth
and Herman. They moved to Salem, South Dakota about 1884. While there Christopher's
wife died. Christopher married again, to Mrs. Henry (Bernadine) Tuschen. She
had two sons, Henry and Frank Tuschen. They lived their lives in South Dakota.
To this marriage, Christopher and his wife had 11 children, seven sons and four
daughters.
From Salem, South Dakota they moved to sterling, Oklahoma about 1902. They lived
here about seven years. In 1908, three of the children, Tony, Will, and Mary,
went to Wyoming to settle. The rest of the family went in 1909. They settled
near Powell, Wyoming. Mrs. Althoff died there in 1924. Christopher died on
August 15, 1937. (All the Children are deceased.) Henry B SCHETTLER and Elizabeth
