DR. JOHN NICHOLAS DORSEY

Dr. John Nicholas Dorsey was born in Jefferson County, Kentucky, on December 31, 1811. His parents were Noah and Ann Hall Dorsey. In 1818, the family moved to Henderson county and settled on what is known as the "Stroungwater Farm," then owned by General Samuel Hopkins. Three months later they moved to a farm near Corydon where his parents spent the rest of their lives.

At the age of thirteen, John returned to Louisville to stay with relatives while he received his education. In 1834, he went to Hardin County and worked in his uncle's business while studying medicine. He was among those in the first two-year class to graduate from the Louisville Medical Institute in 1839. Dr. Thomas Geohegan was his preceptor at the Louisville school. At a public commencement held in the amphitheater of the Institute, the degree of Doctor of Medicine was conferred on alumni of the Institute who presented theses on subjects annexed to their names. Dr. John N. Dorsey of West Point, Kentucky, presented a thesis on the use of cold water as a remediable agent in febrile diseases.

Dr. Dorsey returned to West Point to practice for a short time. He next moved to Davies County, where he practiced for seven years. In 1847, Kentucky Register of Physicians listed him as practicing in the Yelvington community. In April of 1841, Dorsey married Patsy R. Atchison, and some years later the couple moved to Henderson County. they located in a "woods settlement" consisting of two or three log cabins oat the forks of the Henderson-Morganfield and Boxville-Sulphur Springs Road. (Patsy would eventually name this settlement Corydon.) Here Dorsey built a log cabin for his family on a beautiful site near the corner of Second and Bell Streets. In 1852, Dorsey enlarged his holdings through land purchases from John B. and Martha Wilson.

Dorsey's wife, Patsy Rollings Atchison (Martha), was born on September 25, 1820 in Kentucky. She came with her husband to an unbroken forested area where, truly, the "woodbine twineth." They built a log cabin on a small knoll overlooking the site that was to be her hometown for the rest of her life.

Patsy's brother, David Rice Atchison, was a graduate of Transylvania College (1825). He was later elected to the U. S. Senate. When the term of President James K. Polk legally expired on Sunday, March 4, 1849, and President Zachary Taylor decided not to be inaugurated until Monday, the office to the Presidency of the United States theoretically rested, for a day, on the shoulders of the Kentucky senator, David Rice Atchison, who was presiding of the Senate.

He was married to Patsy R. Atchison DORSEY (daughter of ATCHISON and ATCHISON) in Apr 1841. Patsy R. Atchison DORSEY was born on 25 Sep 1820 in Kentucky. She died on 16 Aug 1873 in Corydon KY Henry County. This came out of the Book, MEASURED BY A GRAPEVINE
A history of Corydon, Kentucky 1847

Patsy died on August 16, 1873, at her home. Her obiturary stated that she was a Christian mother, wife and friend, beloved of all who knew her well. She was survived by her husband and five children. Two small children preceded her in death. Patsy, John and all of their daughters are buried in the Corydon Cemetery. Their son, John L., is buried in the Fernwood Cemetery in Herderson.

Following his wife's death, John married Isabelle Phillips. He deeded land in Corydon to his children several different times. He deeded to Bettie Dorsey Powell, his daughter and the wife of Dr. J.N. Powell, the land that was to be her homeplace and is still owned by Ada Bett Steadman, his great-granddaughter. The house is the oldest one in Corydon and could be the only building still in existence near the original 7-1/4 acre survey. He also deeded her the "graveyard lot" next to her home. There is no record of any burial on this lot in the heart of Corydon, near the corner of Powell and Third Streets.

His daughter, Anna Dorsey King, lived in the brick home now owned by Ken O'Nan on Bell Street. She later inherited the homeplace where she and her husband. Harbert King, built a beautiful home which was later owned by Tom Jones. This house has been disassembled and made into smaller homes. The land left by his estate was made into the "Dorsey Enlarge ment" near Broadway and Bell Streets and consists of forth-four lots.

Dr. Dosrsey died on August 23, 1888 and is buried in the Corydaon Cemetery. John and Patsy Dorsey had seven children. Two of their daughters married doctors and their son become a lawyer.
