Ocala - Mr. James Matthew Cotton, 66, died in Ocala Thursday afternoon.

He was born in Ozark County, AL. In September of 1886, and in 1906 was married to Alice Lee Jones. He engaged in general farming and moved to Florida in 1923. He was the son of the Rev. Robert and Mrs. Gussie Base Cotton of Geneva, AL.

Mr. Cotton was a member of the Masonic Lodge Marion-Dunn of Ocala. He is survived by his widow; nine sons, James Cotton and William Floyd Cotton, both of Ocala, Elmer Cotton, Enterprise, AL., Wilmer Cotton, Samson, AL., Charley C. Cotton and Samuel L. Cotton, Kissimmee, Jay J. Cotton, Orlando, and Malcolm Cotton, Cincinnati, OH.; three daughters, Mrs. Manuel L. Maxwell and Mr. Carl W. Johnson, Ocala, and Mrs. Thelma Ruth Yohn, Samson, AL., two brothers, Walter Cotton, Florella, AL., and Drew Cotton, Auburndale; four sisters, Mrs. George McCall and Mrs. Maggie McCall, both of Winter Haven, Mrs. N. Shehe, Bellwood, AL., and Mrs. Oscar Covington, Panama City, and 25 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral services are being arranged locally by the Roberts Funeral Home, Ocala, FL. Services and interment will be held in Geneva, AL.

James Matthew Cotton, resident of S. Orange Ave., died at his home Thursday after a prolonged illness.

Born in Ozark County, Ala., in 1866, he was the son of the late Rev. Robert and Gussie Base Cotton, of Geneva. He married Miss Alice Lee Jones at Samson, Ala. in 1906. He was a member of Olivet Baptist Church, and Marion-Dunn chapter Of the Masons. Prior to his illness he engaged in carpenter work and general farming, moving to Florida in 1923 and Ocala in 1933.

Surviving in addition to the widow are 10 sons, James and William, of Ocala, Elmer, Enterprise, AL. Charlie C. and Samuel L. of Kissimmee, FL., Jay J. of Frostproff, FL., Thomas H. of Orlando, FL., Malcolm, Cincinnati, OH., three daughters Mrs. Manuel L. Maxwell and Mrs. Carl W. Johnson, Ocala, FL., and Thelma Ruth Yohn, Samson, AL., four Sister, Mrs George McCall and Mrs. Maggie McCall, Winter Haven, Mrs N. Shehe, Bellwood, AL., and Mrs. Oscar Covington, Panama City, FL. 25 grandchildren; one great -grandchildren.

The body will lie in state in the chapel of Roberts Funeral Home during this afternoon and evening, Pitman funeral Home in Geneva, AL. for funeral and interment service there Sunday afternoon.

He was married to Alice Lee Jones COTTON (daughter of Samuel A. JONES and Cassie J. Williams JONES) on 7 Dec 1906 in Home of her parents.. Alice Lee Jones COTTON was born on 3 Mar 1890. She died on 14 Dec 1981 in Apopka Florida. Woman's Whirl

Alice Lee Cotton moved to Florida in the early 1920's and to Ocala in 1930. They made their home on Lemon Ave. Now is S.E. 3rd Ave. March 3, 1970. She had Social Security Number 264-41-4792. Mrs. Alice Cotton, 91, formerly of Ocala , died Monday, in Orlando. Born March 3, 1890, Mrs Cotton had lived most of her lifetime in Ocala and for the past ten years had resided with her two daughters in Apopka.

She was a member of Olivett Baptist Church.

Survivors include six sons, Charlie Cotton, of Kissimmee, Jay Cotton of Frostproff, Malcolm Cotton of St. Cloud, Thomas Cotton, Boone, N.C., Jim Cotton and William Cotton of Ocala. Two daughter , Mrs. Erline Maxwell and Mrs. Lorene Johnson, both of Apopka; 22 grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchild.
