Mary Ann Dingmann (daughter of Johann Bernard Dingmann and Maria Gesina Gerthen)20 was born May 06, 1887 in Farming, Stearns, MN, USA21, 21, 21, and died April 21, 1972 in St. Cloud Hospital, St Cloud, Stearns, MN, USA. She married Herman Joseph Schleper on June 12, 1911, son of Tobias Schleper and Regina Schlangen.

Includes NotesNotes for Mary Ann Dingmann:
According to Elmer Schleper, December 2002, "Mom (Mary Ann Dingmann) grew up near Farming (Minnesota), on land homesteaded by her parents. Dad (Herman Joseph Schleper)’s family lived in Lake Henry (Minnesota). Dad was only 17 when his father died. The Schlepers rented farmland in different locations, including some in the Farming area near Janssen’s or Ben Dingmann’s land. That’s how my Dad met my Mom."

"Their wedding was held in Farming (Minnesota). I’ve often wondered how they managed to celebrate weddings in the old days when the couple lived a distance apart. Dad lived in Lake Henry and their wedding was in Farming. There were no cars at the time, so I think the family and the other guests from Lake Henry hooked up the horses and wagons and rode for probably 2 hours to Farming. I know that they had a “bowery”—they set up a dance floor at the farm. I think that most of the out-of-town folks stayed overnight and went home the next day."

"My parents lived in Lake Henry initially, and Ray and Leona were born there. I remember my mother telling us about the day that Ray was born. It was a beautiful day in May, and she raked the lawn in the morning."

"But Mom never liked it in Lake Henry; she always wanted to move back to farming. When my dad’s brother Gerhard got married, one of them had to move out of the Lake Henry house. Mom and Dad bought the farm that you know as the home place, 1 ½ miles west of Farming. Gerhard and his wife lived with my grandmother in Lake Henry. But perhaps that didn’t work out too well, as eventually my grandmother (Regina Schlangen Schleper) moved in with Dad and Mom instead, where she lived until she died."

"Mom (Mary Ann Dingmann) helped with milking but had a lot of help from the other boys already when I (Elmer Schleper) was born. Leona worked out of the house for different families, but I don’t remember Hildegard working elsewhere. During the war years, it was just Hildegard, Joe, and me at home for a while, so she probably helped at home rather than being hired elsewhere. I don’t remember my dad helping with the milking at all."

According to Elmer Schleper, December 2002, "Mom died in 1972, I think he was 84. She was in the Cold Spring Nursing Home for seven or eight years. She had trouble with her ankles and had a hard time walking because her feet puffed up. Besides, the floor was always cold because her house had no furnace, just the stove to heat the place. We told her that she should try a nursing home for the winter. Once she was there, she didn’t want to come back home."

"I (Elmer Schleper) stopped in to see her a lot because I hauled pigs to Cold Spring. Jacki and Pete (Elmer’s youngest two children) always went along. Jacki always had such a good time there at the nursing home. She was maybe 2 or 3 years old, and Pete was 4 or 5. They always got cookies there. Then on the way home, they would always chant, “We want ice cream, we want ice cream!” So then I always had to stop at Brinky’s to get an ice cream cone for them (and me)."

"One morning they found Mom in her bed and she didn’t respond at all. They figured that she had a stroke. They moved her to the St. Cloud Hospital, where she was in a coma for about three days before she died. The night before she died, we went to St. Cloud and stopped at the hospital to see her around 10 p.m. She just had no response at all. Then we got a call the next morning around 5 or 6 a.m. She had died during the night, they weren’t sure just what time, only knew that it was between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m."
