Herman Joseph Schleper (b. June 08, 1887, d. May 22, 1954)

| Herman J. Schleper |
Herman Joseph Schleper (son of Tobias Schleper and Regina Schlangen)46, 47, 48, 49 was born June 08, 1887 in Iowa50, and died May 22, 1954 in Farming, Stearns, MN, USA. He married Mary Ann Dingmann on June 12, 1911, daughter of Johann Bernard Dingmann and Maria Gesina Gerthen.
Notes for Herman Joseph Schleper:
According to Elmer Schleper, December 2002, "He (Herman Joseph Schleper) lost his foot in an accident during the winter of 1918 after Paul was born in July. Dad was sawing wood at the Dingmann’s, and he was fooling around with my Mom’s cousin Norbert. They each wanted to cut the last piece of wood. Norbert grabbed it from dad, causing my dad to get off balance, and his foot went up in the air and ran into the saw. They called the doctor from Richmond to come out as soon as possible. Dingmanns sent a team out to meet the doctor so he’d know where to go. They met the doctor at Feldhege’s and then went full blast back to Dingmann’s. They called my mother to come out there, and they told her to be sure to wear a black dress. (In those days when someone died, you wore black for six months.)"
"They cut off Dad’s foot right at the ankle. They had no Novocain in those days, but they used brandy or whisky moonshine, I guess. They gave him a shot of moonshine, he passed out, and when he came to, they gave him another one…. They were so afraid of bleeding that they had the tourniquet on a little too tight, but he was losing feeling so the doctor had them loosen it up a bit. Later they were afraid of infection and afraid that he would have to lose his whole leg. They didn’t have antibiotics in those days. Dad stayed at the Dingmann house for three months."
"Ray, the oldest, was only 6 at the time, and Mom had Ray, Leona, Albert, Urban, and Paul to take care of plus the farm work. Her brother, Isidore (Dingmann) and sister Annie (later to become Sister Virginette, OSB) stayed at our house and helped with the farm work. They next year, they sold part of the farm to Spaniers because they just couldn’t handle all that work."
"Dad has a prosthesis, which looked just like a foot. I don’t know what it was made of, but it was hard. His stump went into the foot prosthesis, then a plate went from his foot to his knee, there was a hinge in the knee, and then it laced way up on his thigh. It always took him a long time to lace everything up to get ready. He walked with a little limp, and lots of times he had to put extra stuffing in the bottom of the foot because the muscles in his calf no longer worked. Once in a while, to scare us kids, Dad would take the whole thing off and point at us with his stump as a joke. On certain days when the weather was changing, my dad said that he could feel the cut where the saw hit his foot."
"My Dad smoked cigars and chewed tobacco. He started after his foot accident. We had to clean the spittoon. That was an awful job! Mom lectured us kids, “Don’t you ever smoke or chew!”"
According to Elmer Schleper, December 2002, "Dad’s death certificate says he died of cardiac arrest. It was the end of May in 1954. He wasn’t feeling good, and thought that he had the flu. I called Dr. Koop (“Black Koop”). Their regular doctor, Red Koop, had died, and the Black Keep, his brother, had an office in Richmond. (They were called Red Koop and Black Koop based on the color of their hair.) I (Elmer Schleper) called him on Wednesday or Thursday because Dad couldn’t keep any food down. He said that he’d be out there to see him. On Friday night, we celebrated Albert’s wedding anniversary and we stopped in at Mom and Dad’s to see if they wanted to go along. He still was not feeling well so Mom and Dad didn’t go. We stopped in again around midnight on the way home, and Mom said that he had fainted when he was up to the bathroom and she had a hard time getting him back to bed. He didn’t look good at all."
"The next morning, I did the milking and then chased over there to check on him again. Dr. Koop hadn’t been there yet and dad didn’t look good. I called our doctor from Paynesville, Dr. Koenig. He came right out and said that he’s dehydrated and we needed to get him to the hospital. Dr. Koenig had a stretcher in his car, so we moved him with that. Jake, Urban, and I all went with him. When we were just about in Roscoe, Jake said that Dad “jolted.” He was just barely breathing by the time they got him to the hospital and then he quit breathing. They didn’t give him IV fluids because they didn’t really have a chance. He was 67 years old. I still think that if Dr. Koop would have come out to see him and would have gotten treatment for him earlier, things would have been different. But…when your time’s up, your time’s up."
