46. Most of the New England DUTTONs are traced back to Thomas. He lived in Reading, MA until 1657, then Woburn, MA 1658-68, then removed to Billerica, MA 1669 where he was listed still living with his sons Thomas and John in 1775. --Middlesex Co., Court Records, vol. 1 p. 239 1668 action of slander against Michael Bacon Jr., who had accused him of being a thief. 22 citizens of Reading testified Dutton had "lived amongst us in the Towne of Reeding for the space of 7 years thereabouts." In 1661, he was convicted of beating his wife, though both denied it. In 1668, he sued Michael Bacon for slander after the latter accused him of theft. Bacon also asserted that Dutton had been notorious in the town of Reading. In the trial, Dutton presented an endorsement, signed by 22 citizens of Reading, that he had lived there seven years and had been held of good character and not been known to take anything not rightfully his. There was also a statement signed by fifteen residents of Woburn stating that Dutton had lived there "near ten years" and had been held in good repute. He won the suit. That list of fifteen is: Josias Convars, William Johnson, Mathew Johnson, James Convars, Samuel Convars, John Broockes, Thomas Peirce, Samuell Walker Sr, John Russell Jr, Henry Broockes, Isack Broockes, Edward Win, Richard Gardner, John Russell Sr, and John Carter. He was accepted as an inhabitant of Billerica, 1669 Nov 20. He lived on the south side of Fox Brook, NW of the Davis place. Thomas lived in Billerica 1669-1687, on the south side of Fox Brook, by the road which led to "the great plain," northwest of the Davis home. Thomas was the 4G Grandfather of the Prophet Joseph Smith. Probably the son of John DUTTON. Came to New England in 1630. Was in Woburn in 1662 then removed to Billerica. 50. JOHN4 GATCHELL (SAMUELL3, SAMUEL2, UNKNOWN FATHER1) was born 1697 in Salisbury, Essex County, Massachusetts, and died 10 May 1771 in Brunswick, District of Maine. He married ELIZABETH WHITAKER Bef. 1719, daughter of WILLIAM WHITAKER and SARAH EMERSON. She was born 07 Apr 1698 in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Notes for JOHN GATCHELL: From the 1909 "Family of Samuel Getchell" by Everett Lamont Getchell: On June 22, 1720, John Getchell was granted land in Scarboro, Maine, at a Proprietors' meeting held at that place. He served as a corporal in Capt. John Gray's company from June 3 to Nov 22, 1725 (mass. Arc., vol. 9, pg 221). In 1736 he, with his wife Elizabeth and their eight children, moved to New Meadows, a part of Brunswick, where he was elected one of the selectmen in the first town meeting. The next year his name appears as one of the signers of a petition by the inhabitants of "Sheepscott, Whiscasick and Damriscotty" to the Hon. Spencer Phips, Esq., Gov.-in-Chief, etc., praying for protection against the Indians. In 1739, he bought of Arthur Noble land on the Winnegance River. He was made Captain of the militia company at Brunswick, and in March 1748 (from the 7th to the 18th) he led a company of men on a scouting expedition up the Kennebec, going as far north as the Belgrade lakes, and Snow Pond in sidney. In 1751, he was captain of a company in which his son John, Jr., was sergeant, and which performed guard and scout duty. He was the King's surveyor, and made numerous surveys in all the adjoining towns. In 1760 "John Getchell, Gentleman", of Brunswick, sold to George Coombs land in Georgetown (York Co. deeds). He was a noted Indian fighter, and a man of great influence in the region. He is described by one who remembers seeing him as "a large, portly, venerable-looking old man, especially when he appeared on Sunday with white wig and triangular hat." He was buried in the Gatchell/Getchell graveyard, near Brunswick, Maine. His tombstone is inscribed "He.

54. RootsWeb on-line, Some researchers believe the father of John and Samuel Gatchell may have been named Thomas Gatchell, and that this Thomas Gatchell married Susan Peach in 1609 in Pitminster, Somerset, England. The timing and location of this marriage appear to indicate a strong possibility that they are indeed the parents of John and Samuel Gatchell, who came to America. It is worthy to note that John Gatchell, Samuel's brother, named two of his children Thomas and Henry. Thomas Gatchell of England, who married Susan Peach, had a brother named Henry, who owned property in the Somerset, England, area. These names for John's sons support the argument that Thomas Gatchell of Somerset, England, is indeed the father of both John and Samuel. .
55. RootsWeb on-line, Gatchell/Getchell Descendants, The father of John and Samuel Gatchell, in all probability, was English. There are indications documented in the "Topographical Dictionary of 2885 English Emigrants to New England, 1620-1650" by Charles Edward Banks (1967) that the Gatchell brothers John and Samuel came from West Monkton, Somersetshire, England. The Mary & John Clearing House, vol. 19, part three, suggests the possibility that they came to America on the ship "Hopewell" which sailed from Weymouth, England, in 1635. Some researchers believe the father of John and Samuel Gatchell may have been named Thomas Gatchell, and that this Thomas Gatchell married Susan Peach in 1609 in Pitminster, Somerset, England. These names for John's sons support the argument that Thomas Gatchell of Somerset, England, is indeed the father of both John and Samuel. .
56. As for the locality of John Gatchell's birth, it appears implied by the "Topographical Dictionary of 2885 English Emigrants to New England, 1620-1650" by Charles Edward Banks (1967). It appears clear that their ship came from the West Monkton area, and there is also other evidence of a significant Gatchell family presence in West Monkton at the correct time. However, apparently there are no definitive birth records proving the locality or parentage of the birth for John Gatchell or his brother Samuel Gatchell. Consequently, the presumed birth of John Gatchell and his brother in the West Monkton locality is based largely on circumstantial evidence. .
57. RootsWeb on-line, David A. Getchell's 1991 Getchell Genealogy also concludes the brothers John and Samuel were "probably" born in West Monkton, as they came from this locality in 1636. This work cites records in England of a large Gatchell farm in this area divided into two areas of 500 acres each and known as Upper and Lower Clavelsleigh. This work also indicates that this farm was in the hands of a Henry Gatchell, the sheriff of the county, during the 17th century, and it mentions that Henry Gatchell had a brother Thomas, that neither Henry nor Thomas had male descendants, so consequently this farm property was passed to daughters who had married men by the names of Popham, Sanford and Fytch. Perhaps, however, Henry or Thomas did have sons, but maybe they left the local area for America. .
58. Notes for SAMUELL GATCHELL, JR.: From the 1909 "Family of Samuel Getchell" by Everett Lamont Getchell: Samuel Getchell served with Capt. Poole's Co. stationed at Hatfield, Massachusetts during the winter of 1676-1677. This was with Caption Jonathan Poole's company during the King Philip's War. .

They had picked it up while they were stationed at Misowa Naval base in Japan from a Trac y descendant they met there. Its true, we are everywhere! With that in mind, the information on the children, and the text information enclosed is fro m that manuscript. Where I have found material that supports those statements, I have note d it. George Gildersleeve [ibid] states that he married 1) Lucy Avery, b. 1713, and married 2) to A bigail Riggs. He does not list any sources for the information. .
258. Ruby Tracy:, Jonathan moved from Preston, CT to Old Falmouth in the District of Maine, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, which is now known as the Stroudwater district of Portland, Maine settling there in 1742. He and Abigail became members of the First Parish Church there in 1744. He was Sergeant of the Back Cove militia in Falmouth from 1751-1762 during the French and Indian War, which was one long struggle between France and Great Britain for possession of North America. Most of the Algonkian speaking tribes were friendly with the French. So the Iroquois, enemies of the Algonkian, sided with the British. Both the French and British bribed the Indians with liquor and guns in an effort to win their support. In the end, the British were victorious. Jonathan and Abigail with their 10 children, the youngest being Samuel who was about six weeks old, moved to Gouldsboro from Old Falmouth the first part of August in 1762. He had been enticed there by an offer of free grants of land from the proprietors--three lots for himself and one for each of his sons. He built his home on Gouldsboro Point on West Bay. He was one of the original settlers and owned several hundred acres of land. On April 19, 1775, "the shot that was heard around the world" was fired in Lexington and the Revolutionary war started. Jonathan and Abigail had five sons who served in the Revolutionary War. In late September of 1795, Abigail passed away. Six months later in mid-March of 1796, Jonathan died at the home of his daughter, Lydia (Tracy) Leighton. It is uncertain where they are or were buried. Some say they were buried on the shore by their home on West Bay in Gouldsboro. If so, over the last 200 years, erosion and high tides may have washed their remains out to sea. The T. R. Hammond was built on the shores of Jonathan Tracy's homestead in 1857. A piece was taken by Mr. William Workman, the father of our masons, in trade. Afterwards, Mr. Workman sold his interest for a horse and carriage, exhibiting his keen.
259. sense of humor by saying, "I now have the reins in my own hands." William Workman was a great grandson-in-law of Jonathan and Abigail. He married Lydia Foster Stevens who was the daughter of Abigail (Tracy) Stevens and Captain Joseph Stevens and the great-granddaughter of Mary (Tracy) Stevens and Deacon Jonathan Stevens. Mary was Jonathan and Abigail's second daughter and fifth born child. Seventy-five (plus or minus) acres of Jonathan's original holdings are still owned by the descendants of the Tracy Reunion Association, Incorporated. This acquisition can to be attributed to the foresight and vision of some of our ancestors who wanted to preserve the land for all generations to come and keep it in the family. To raise the money for the purchase of the land, the Association sold shares at $1.00 a piece. No one was allowed to buy more than five shares. This was to prevent dominance, superiority and personal gain. The land was purchased in fall of 1900. For many years, the annual Reunion was held on the property in the grove where there was a pavilion. Due to lack of upkeep the pavilion deteriorated and was no longer suitable for use. Since that time, the Reunions have been held at various locations including Cushman Grange, Steuben School Gym, The Womens' Club in Prospect Harbor and the Gouldsboro Community Building. .
260. Near the house, stood a very large piece of red granite upon which Jonathan had chiseled his initials and the year of 1762-that was the year he settled in Gouldsboro. This huge piece of red granite had remained intact on the property which had been passed down through the years with various descendants owning it. One of the Tracy widows mortgaged an acre of the land with the house thereon which was the original home of Jonathan and Abigail Tracy. It was located on the point, which was the prime spot of the land. When she passed away, the mortgagee foreclosed on the homestead. The house sat empty and eventually fell to ruin as the years took their toll. That one acre of land was deserted and landlocked for many years, as there was no means of access except by boat or on foot. In 1991, one of the Tracy heirs sought a right-of-way across the Tracy Reunion property as she wanted to buy this acre and build a home on it. The right-of-way was granted and sometime during the construction of the road or the house, that historic red granite boulder "was lost". Discrepancies: Ida Marie's GEDCOM shows that Jonathan was born on December 19, 1713. Ruby Tracy shows he was born on December 29, 1713. .
261. He had a son Christopher, who was the father of the Jonathan Tracy who was born in Norwich (or Preston) 29 Dec. 1713. This Jonathan came to old Falmouth, Me., and married in 1743 Abigail, dau. of Jeremiah and Rachel Riggs. (Riggs was a tanner, son of John and Ruth (Wheeler) Riggs of Gloucester, Mass. He came to Falmouth in 1725 and lived near Stroudwater.) Their first four children were baptized at the First Parish Church, of which the parents became members in 1744. They lived in the vicinity of Back Cove, and he was Sergeant of a militia company there in 1757. .
262. In Aug. 1762 Jonathan Tracy moved to Gouldsborough, Me., induced by the proprietors by the free grant of lots of land for himself and sons. His descendants in that town and vicinity are very numerous. In an old family Bible, now in the possession of Wm. H. Thomas, the following children are recorded: .

270. Lt. Thomas Tracy, of Norwich,, Lieut. Thomas Tracy was evidently a man of talent and ac- tivity, skillful in the management of varions kinds of business. He took great interest in ship-building, and did not think it a degradation to use his hands as well as his mind. The confi- dence placed in him by his associates is manifested in the great number of appointments which he received. His name is on the roll of the Legislature as representative of Norwich, at twenty- seven sessions. The elections were semi-annual, and Mr. Tracy was chosen twenty-one times, beginning October 9, 1662, and ending July 5, 1684. The others were extra sessions. In August 1673, he was lieutenant of the "New London County Dragoons," enlisting to fight the Dutch and Indians. .
271. By first marriage he had seven children, of whom Jonathan was born in 1648. 294. Ltjonathantracy.ftw] Served in the revolution, is listed as follows in the DAR Centennial edition of Patriots: Solomon Tracy b. 3-4-1750; d.p. 1777; m. Mary Getchell; Pvt MA. His residence was given as No. 4. C. Tracy MacFarland gives the following information: ..... settled in Durham after marriag e where he lived for a number of years. He then moved to Rome, Maine where he lived the rema inder of his life, dying there. He had several children born in Royalsborough or Durham main e. Only four children are listed, there were probably others born but C.T. MacFarland has foun d no record. Source Ruby Tracy: Solomon served as a private in Captain Henry Dyer's company and Colonel Foster's regiment on various alarms at Machias in August, September and October of 1777. He also served in Captain Reuben Dyer's company on an expedition against St. John, Nova Scotia from October through December, 1777. He enlisted on September 11, 1775 and served 3 months, 3 weeks and 6 days. He was a private in Captain Francis Shaw's company. His company was stationed at Gouldsborough, No. 4, Narraguagus and Pleasant River to defend the coastline. After his military stay, he settled in Durham where he lived for a number of years. In 1810, he left Durham and moved to Rome, Maine. Apparently, his four children were all born in Durham and the youngest one was married in 1810 about the time he came to Rome. Solomon, Jr. and Nathaniel, his two sons, both lived and died in Rome. It is unknown where his two daughters and their husbands lived. In 1812, at the age of 62, he went to New Brunswick to visit his oldest brother Jeremiah. Of the twelve siblings, he was the only one to ever pay a visit to Jeremiah. We can only speculate as to how he may have gotten there. He probably went by boat or ship--this would seem to be the most likely way he would have traveled. Sol was over six feel tall and could hit a blow like a steam hammer. Yet he had a meek way and a sociable drawl. He was never.
295. looking for trouble and his demeanor fooled some people. He escaped being pressed into service in the British Navy as related in N. B. Tracy's Historical Address at the Tracy Reunion on August 19, 1899 at Gouldsboro, Maine. . . . ."One time he went down into New Brunswick to visit his brother Jeremiah. He was in St. John one day, calling on a trader whom he knew, and toasting his long shanks by the stove when in walked a British Captain in the Navy with a file of six men all well armed. This, mind you, was just prior to the War of 1812. "Come along down to the wharf with me," said the Captain, addressing Uncle Sol. "Guess I won't," replied Uncle Sol. "I'm comfortable here." "That don't make any difference," said the Captain; "we want you to go down, now." "Wal, Capt," drawled Uncle Sol, "I've been daown to the wharf and seed it all before. I don't know as I want to see it naow." "There's no need for you to talk about it any more," said the brash Britisher. "We want you to go down to the wharf and you're going, and now." "Wal, p'raps I shell, and p'raps I won't." "If you don't go of your accord, we shall take you." "Wal, p'raps ye will -- and then agin, p'raps ye won't." When Sol said this, the Captain stepped up to him and put his hand on the lofty shoulder of the old man. Sol was going on seventy. (According to his date of birth, he was actually 62). His boast was that he allowed no man to go patting him on the back. He made one pass and the Captain, a second later, was lying flat on the floor, stunned by the great, hairy fist that swung up under his nose. As soon as the Captain fell, his six marines started for Uncle Sol. They clubbed their muskets and proposed to make short work of him. But -- and this is vouched for -- almost before they knew where they were at, they were piled in a corner on top of the Captain. Their muskets flew every which way. Then Uncle Sol straddled the heap and held it down; he literally sat down on them! The Captain begged to be.

And after considering the matter, Uncle Sol arose and the pile disentangled itself. Sol looked at them, rather doubtfully, as they resumed their arms. "Oh, we're not going to trouble you again," said the Captain. "We shall keep our promise." "Well, you'd better stick to that idee," said Uncle Sol calmly. "For I want to tell ye naow, that ye ain't got men enough in the hull British Navy to take me." The trader, who afterward visited in Brunswick, brought the story to Maine, saying that when he saw that press-gang coming, he knew there would be fun. But somehow or other they don't have that variety of double-fisted old chaps in these days.". Solomon Tracy was a genuine Yankee, a 'Brother Jonathan." It has been said that he was a very powerful man, and many anecdotes have circulated in the family of his prowess, his shrewdness --- as well as feats of strength. One story related by the Reverend Jonathan Tracy, father of N. B. Tracy and son of Reverend Christopher, Solomon's brother, is about a Magic Rooster. N.B. Tracy writes in hisHistorical Address. . . . "My father used to tell about a curious sort of person, full of magic and black art, who went abroad over Maine mystifying the rustics. According to my informant, this personage, whoever he was had some of the Hindu arts down fine. You know they say that some of the more remarkable of the East Indian juggling tricks are purely mental illusions of the spectator instead of actual occurrences produced by the operator. That is to say, when the Hindu throws the cord into the air, and apparently climbs up and up and out of sight, he simply hypnotizes his bystanders into the belief that he is performing the feat. Now I am told that this unknown who went about through Maine did similar things. One time he was giving an exhibition in Brunswick. He gathered a crowd about and informed the wondering peop.

And then the magician took a rooster out of his black box, made a few mystic passes, and lo, the rooster strutted away, drawing behind him in the dust, something that certainly, to their eyes, bore every appearance of that sixty-foot mast. And while they stood there, peering and wondering, and dumb with their amazement, Uncle Sol Tracy walked up. Now it so happened that Uncle Sol, as the story goes, was born with a veil over his face, therefore he couldn't be hypnotized or mesmerized, as they called it in the old days. He came crowding up, and elbowed to the front rank of the crowd. "What in thunder are ye lookin' at?" he shouted. "Why, can't ye see that rooster pullin' that mast along?" someone in the crowd inquired. "Mast nothin'!" snorted Uncle Sol. "I've got pretty good eyes myself, and I don't see anything there but a rooster pulling along a straw." "And do you know," says the man who tells me the story, "that's all there was to it. The rooster had a straw. Just as soon as Uncle Sol said it, then every one could see for themselves for the spell was broken. And the magician was so mad that he set out to lick Uncle Sol; but after that black art chap had given him a look or two, -- well, he changed his mind." And from what I hear myself of Uncle Sol Tracy's early prowess, I guess the dealer in black art made a wise decision. . . . . .

309. Notes for ELIZABETH WHITAKER: The case for Elizabeth's maiden name was researched and eloquently and convincingly espoused in an article in the Downeast Maine genealogical newsletter many years ago. It was published as follows: WHO WAS ELIZABETH (__________) GATCHELL? by Lillian Seebohm Undoubtedly, one of the greatest challenges to a genealogist tracing family lines is to be able to discover the surname which belongs in the (_________) which so frequently follows the given name of an early ancestress. I have sought to meet this challenge in one case; and I here set forth the conclusion I have reached regarding the maiden name of Elizabeth Gatchell, the wife of Capt. John3 Gatchell (Samuel2-1), of Salisbury, Essex County, Massachusetts and Scarborough and Brunswick, Maine. My research into the Gatchell family has shown me that there are still a large number of descendants of John3 and Elizabeth Gatchell in Maine, several of whom are actively tracing their ancestral lines. I should like to submit my hypothesis for their consideration and for consideration by any other person who may find it of interest. The first child of John3 and Elizabeth (_________) Gatchell was John4 Jr., born at Scarborough, April 25, 1719. On November 7, 1742, he married Mary Barbour of Falmouth. In his History of Durham, Maine, Everett Stackpole lists the twelve children of John4 and Mary Gatchell (although he ascribes them to John3). The eleventh child and youngest daughter was Elizabeth W., born February 15, 1764, who married Samuel Tracy. The International Genealoqical Index to the Latter Day Saints' (Mormon) genealogical collection contains this entry: "Gatchell, Elizabeth Whitecar, married Samuel Tracy at Brunswick, Cumberland County, Maine, May 28, 1783." Here was a woman bearing the given name of her grandmother; and her middle name was certainly a surname, possibly her grandmother's maiden name.
310. In several of my family lines, I had encountered instances where a female child was named for her grandmother, with the grandmother's maiden surname being the child's middle name. I felt, therefore, that here was a possible clue to the identity of Elizabeth (_________) Gatchell. "Whitecar" somehow did not seem to be an actual surname, but rather a corruption or misspelling of a name. Broken into syllables and spoken, it can become "Whi-te-car" or a common surname "Whitaker". Assuming that this was the name, I looked for other instances of the spelling "Whitecar". In Massachussetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolution it appears among a large number of variant spellings of the name Whitaker. In the 1820 federal census, a Moses Whitecar appears in Montville, Maine. The index to volumes 1-50 of the New England Historical and Genealogical Register lists a dozen different spellings under the heading "Whitaker" - among them "Whitacar", "Whitacer" and "Whiticar". The vital records of Beverly, Massachusetts, show the marriage in 1716 of Abraham Whitticer and Lydia Stone. Subsequently, Lydia "Whitecar" owned the covenant and had a child baptized in 1718; and in 1724, a Lydia "Whitecar" married Edward Whittington of Marblehead. I was satisfied that "Whitecar" could well be "Whitaker". The problem, then was to find an Elizabeth Whitaker who could feasibly have become the wife of John3 Gatchell. .
