Notes for James Maher:
+ James Maher was sentenced to 7 years transportation at Tipperary, Ireland in 1828. He sailed from Cork on September 21st, 1828 on the "Governor Ready" (2), and after a passage of 117 days, arrived in Sydney on January 16th, 1829. There were 200 passengers on the ship. In 1841 James married Mary Mulcahy who also came from Tipperary. It states in the 1841 Hunter Valley Directory that they lived at Narrowgut, near Morpeth. [WSheppard 30.7.2000]
+ "James I believe was a convict from Upperchurch, Tipperary, who was convicted for manslaughter (Tipperary News newspaper acticle) and was transported to Oz arriving 16/1/1829 [on the] "Sir Govenor Ready [2]. He served his time and was granted a Ticket of Leave in the Patterson District [Dungog/Mailtand area]. In 1838/1839 Mary Mulcahy arrived aboard the 'Duchess of Northumberland'...In 1841James and Mary married and settled in the Clarencetown/Dungog. They raised nine children and after the death of James in 1871 the children and mary moved first to the Taree area and finally to Coraki, where Mary died. James is buried somewhere in the Clarencetown cementery, no headstone or official listing of graves, while Mary is buried at Coraki cemeteruy, again no headstone." + "Upperchurch or Templeoutragh (An Teampall Uachtarach in Irish meaning the Upper Church) is a parish in the Barony of Kilmenaugh, the county of Tipperary and the province of Munster. It is located in the south midlands 5 miles [8km] south east of Borrisoleigh, on the road from Newport to Thurles. It is in the diocese of Cashel. The village of Upperchurch [population 329 - 1996 census], which lies in the Slievefelin Hills has a rectory which was impropriate to the Marguis of Ormond. The Roman catholic Church in Upperchurch forms part of the parish of Templepatric, the other division being Moyaliffe. There is also a school. There are some remains of an old church."
