We take pleasure in reprinting the following brief sketch of Maj. J. M. Stewart, which appeared in a recent issue of the Pickens Sentinel. Maj. Stewart is one of the best men in all the land, and has exerted an influence for good in his county that cannot be estimated. In private and public life his record is without blemish. The Sentinel says: "A native of Pickens county, now in his 62nd year, received his education at an old field school. Prior to the late war he held several military positions from captain to lieutenant-colonel. Went into the late war captain and was promoted to major. Served through the war, returning home at the close and engaged in agriculture, and made a success in farming. In August, 1880, he was ordained to the gospel ministry of the Baptist denomination, and has served a great many churches. In 1884 he was chosen as a missionary by the Board of the Baptist State Convention, and served them much to the delight of the people among whom he labored. He held that position for three years, and until his health failed. He preached in Pickens and Oconee counties, S.C., and Jackson and Transylvania counties, N.C. He has represented his association in the Southern Baptist Convention and in the State Convention. He served as clerk of the Twelve Mile River Association for several years, and also as moderator of said association for many years. In 1888 he was elected clerk of court for Pickens county and held that position for twelve years and was appointed by his successor as deputy clerk of the board of county commissioners. He has been a success in all his undertakings in life."
