Life of Uncle Jack as remembered by his nephew Hubert.

As a boy he was riding a wagon wheel, cutting cart wheels, pulled by a team of mules, when his head struck a rock and squashed in one side of his skull. He was about 10 years old at the time. He never grew any taller nor did his brain mature any more. So he was retarded in learning sense, but not in common sense. You would have known that if you had ever talked to him.

He was named after a general his father had served under during the Civil War. He never married, and lived with my father and mother, his brother Longstreet Evins (also named for a Civil War General) and his wife Flossie, for most of his life. His Dad's request was for my dad to look out for and support Uncle Jack as long as he lived. Dad died in 1959 (age 74) and Uncle Jack lived until 1972 to the age of 90. After Dad's death, Uncle Jack stayed with my mother and sister (Jean) for 2 months then went to the "Old Folk's Home" in Greenville County in July 1959, where he stayed until his death in 1972.

In loving memory of the man who helped raise me--Uncle Jack Hayes.
