*Luner was a midwife and delivered many babies up in the Cane Brake section of Transylvania C o, NC and Pickens Co, SC. She made alot of moonshine but never got caught (unlike her brother s, husband and brother-in-law's!!!) The picture in the picture page is of her at about 21 i n a nurses uniform. She had some nursing training. One mean woman when she was likkered up. S he would always give us kids a penny roll to take to the store when she was babysitting us wh ile we were visiting Rosman. She then lived on Burnt Rd. right off of Turnpike Rd. in Rosman , Transylvania Co, NC. When granny died, she did not have a gray hair in her head. It was coa l black. She still looked like an indian in death. Supposedly the indian came in through th e Patterson line. Her aunt, Selena Patterson Galloway, and her mother's cousins, Nancy Patter son Fisher and Frances 'Frankey' Stewart Thomas and their children tried to apply for a clai m for compensation from the government under the Guion Miller Roll. They were rejected for la ck of proof (have copies of Selena, Nancy applications and an abstract of Frankey's.)

Luner had a waterfall named after her in Transylvania Co, NC. It is the third falls of the To xaway Creek. It is now called Luner Falls. The story I have always heard is that she was brin ging some moonshine into town to sell and fell off the falls. She never lost her 'load.' The y are 125 feet high!!! The story that most folks say is that she was fishing with one of he r brothers and slipped on the slippery rocks and fell over the falls. The brother was afrai d to look for what he would see. But, when he got down to the bottom, she had already gotte n out and still had her fish (have copy of article from Transylvania Times.)

Luner was the subject of a dispute and murder over her. Her husband, Elec Cantrell, caught he r in a compromising position with a neighbor and 2nd cousin, Sheppard Powell. (Aunt Dot Cantr ell Robinson says Sheppard was leaving as grandpa Elec was coming in.) Elec then grabbed a st raight razor off the mantel and proceeded to slash at Sheppard. Granny told the kids to run a nd get the doctor. The doctor came and Sheppard was bleeding badly. He cut into his chest an d Sheppard took one breath and then died (must have cut into his lung-probably likkered up. ) Elec was arrested and brought up on charges of 2nd degree murder. The judge would not let t he children testify for their father. Dot was 7, Lona was 5 and my father, Jake was 4. They h ad seen the whole thing. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison (have copies of arraignment , indictment, jury impanelment and sentencing courtesy of Transylvania Co, NC Superior Cour t Clerk, Dorene Mahoney.) He escaped in 1922 and was recaptured. When he returned home from p rison, he was arrested again on charges of Assault on a Female (awaiting copy from Transylvan ia Co, NC Superior Court Clerk, Dorene Mahoney.) He was sentenced to 18 years and spent thi s time in a mental institution. Elec died in 1958 while living in Clover, York Co, SC separat ed from Luner (have obit.)

Luner also made quite a bit of moonshine and bootlegged it in the mountains.
