16. Lake of Woods Museum, Lori Nelson- William George Jay was elected Mayor of Kenora in 1947. He was re-elected in 1948 with a majority of 47 votes but only served a short period before his death in June of that year. George Carmichael took over the mayoralty at a by-election held in June. Mr. Jay's first attempt at civic politics was in 1935 when he ran for a vacant aldermanic seat. He was defeated by Miss Elizabeth Courtney (the first woman to be elected to the Kenora Town Council) that year but tried again in 1936. He was successful and remained a councillor for the next ten years before taking over the office of Mayor.
17. Personal Info, Came to Kenora to work in the mill. He and his brothers were sawers and they sought work in Sarnia. Plaster Rock and Kenora. All mill towns. The mill burned down in Kenora shortly after he got there post WWI and he worked for the CPR. He was the Yardmaster and was run over by a switching engine in the early 1920's and lost his right arm and left leg below the knee. Poor sense of smell as well from head injury. Got a full CPR pension through the depression years. See earlier note as was alderman and mayor from 36 to 48.

19. 1709 five Schulteiss (many spellings) (Lord Mayor- or mayor of a small town) immigrate under Queen Anne fram Palatinate are of the Rhine Valley going to Ireland. 3 remain in Ireland, 1 goes to Australia and 1 returns to Germany. They settle in country Limmerick and each gets 8 acres of land, tools, livestock, an seed. They are Protestants.

31. Immigrates with Talbot Party on ship Brunswick with son James A to Canada in 1818. Leave Cork of Quebec settlers boarded on June 11th, and they set sail about 11 a.m. on the 13th. Like most non-sailors, our emigrants suffered from sea sickness, especially with the unfavourable winds of the first two weeks. On the thirty-first day, Newfoundland was sighted, and a few days later the continent. Heavy fog for two days almost caused them to run aground on Anticosta (sic) Island, but finally on July 29th, they anchored at Québec City. By the standards of the time, a good voyage. Unfortunately, there was an outbreak of measles, and a total of twenty-four children died enroute, all under 14 years of age. Eleven died after reaching the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and these later deaths were buried on various islands almost daily. (The only adult death was that of John Spearman in Lachine, August 9 .) In 1818, the Montréal Gazette was a four page bilingual weekly, and it contained listings of the previous week's ship arrivals. In the issue of 5 August 1818, there were 13 arrivals in the Port of Québec between July 23rd and 29th, with three ships arriving on 29 July ; - H.M.S. Iphigenia, - The Brunswick, and the entry reads "Ship Brunswick, (Robert) Blake, 45 days from Cork, to Patterson & Co.-stores to Government-230 settlers". (NB:- Talbots party believed to have numbered 183, others are believed to have been disbanded soldiers and their families.) Listed to go to Goulbourne Township to settle G SHOULDICE, James 31, farmer, probably Fifteen Acres, Dunkerrin; Jane (Boyd) 28; Nicholas 7; Joseph 5; possibly Elizabeth 3 and Robert 1, both of whom died young, possibly at sea. 40. 1871 Rat Portage Tnshp Census Algoma. Lists birth place of both parents as Scotland. In a reference from Stellarton NS is a Alexander Sutherland that settles there is 1821- if same he would be about 3 yo.
