The Brasel Family
      Matt (probably Mathias) Brasel, was a twin of John R. Brasel, and was born April 8, 1842. On March 1, 1860, he married Frances (Fannie) Phillips who was born in Morgan County, Tennessee, October 13, 1839... It has been told that this wedding took place as the Phillips, Brasel and other families were on their way to Arkansas, and while they were taking refuge from snow storm by camping in an old schoolhouse. I personally believe all this occurred soon after the families arrived in Newton County, Arkansas, and were waiting out the storm before seeking individual homes.
      Matt and his new bride seem to have first settled in the Hickory Grove Community (now Nail) west of Deer, Arkansas. Matt went from there to serve in the Union Army during the Civil War...
      It is told that when Matt was on the way home from the war, he stopped in an apple orchard with the intention of lunching on the fruit there. The owner discovered him and shot him in the arm as he fled the site. In later years, Matt drew a pension because of this arm injury.
      Matt Brasel died of typhoid on October 28, 1903 and is buried in the Union Hill Cemetery near his old home. A spring on his place was believed to be "bad or poisoned"... and drinking of its water was thought to have been the cause of his death...
