Notes for ERNEST SERVIS:
Ernest Servis lived in Trenton, NJ as a child. The Servis children depended on the Salvation Army for things like a toothbrush and toothpaste and other simple necessities. He and some of his siblings had learned to steal bread, firewood, and anything the family needed to survive. When Erne was caught stealing a lady's purse, he had to appear in court. To his surprise, his "victim" appeared also. The judge decided that Erne needed to be placed in foster care. Mrs. Nora Cullen, whose purse young Erne had tried to steal, offered to become his foster mother. It was then that Erne left the hardships of the city and went to live in the country in Robinsville with Charles and Nora Cullen. The Cullens owned a large, beautiful farm where they grew soy beans. Their home was an elegant farm house, much larger than the childless couple needed, but Charles had inherited the farm from his father. Erne didn't live a life of leisure with the Cullens. They were hard-working people, and Erne had to work too. He was rewarded for his work with going to see a movie or going out for ice cream. Erne lived with the Cullens until he went to serve in the Navy. He remained close to them until their deaths in the 1970s.

Served on the U.S.S. Juneau during the Korean War.
