Karen grew up in Hamilton Square, Mercer County, New Jersey. She moved with her parents and brother to Harrison Arkansas in September, 1971, at the age of 16. She met and married her husband, Don, in Harrison in 1974. They moved to Conway, Arkansas in 1977, where Don attended college. There they bought a home and began raising a family. Karen injured her back and had surgery in 1988. A second surgery was needed in 1989. The Simpkins family decided to move to Don's hometown of Jasper, Arkansas in 1990.
