bullet Michael Antoine GAROUTTE(38) (37) was born on 12 Apr 1750 in Marseilles, France. (105) He died on 29 Apr 1829 in Pemberton, NJ. (105)(38) Michael Garoutte was highly education, supposedly for the priesthood,
and attended the same military schools as LaFayette, who was his close
friend. In 1775 at the age of 25, Michael Garoutte outfitted his own
ship and left his home in Marseilles, coming to America to aid the
colonies in their fight for freedom. He landed on the New Jersey coast,
probably near Pleasant Mills, and during the early years of the
Revolution was of great assistance to the colonial government, the
tradition being handed down in the family that he lent money and
outfitted and manned several ships which he gave to the government.
Because of the destruction of the New Jersey Archives covering this
period, no documentary proof of this remains. One of his ships was
burned and sunk by the British at or near Sand Point, on the Mullica
River, and another is said to have been burned at Quebec. He was a
volunteer officer on the brig ENTERPRISE and on the sloop-of-war RACE
HORSE.

Michael was once riding with some American and French officers when they
met a party of British officers. In the fight that followed, Michael
was wounded in the head and left for dead. An old Quaker, James Smith,
who happened to be passing in a wagon, saw signs of life and carried him
to his home, where he was nursed back to health. Michael later married
(Oct 26 1778, at Pleasant Mills, NJ) Sophia Smith, the daughter of his
benefactor. James Smith lived in Egg Harbor Township, Gloster County,
NJ, and his 1781 tax receipts show he owned 125 acres, one horse, four
cows and a sawmill. Sophia (Smith) Garoutte had one sister Berthia, b
1754, d 1783, who married a Mr. Gale, and two brothers, James Smith,
Jr., and Isaac Smith. Sophia's father, James, was an innkeeper, men
appointed as of good morals who could report to the settlement whether
or not guests at the inn were apt to be desirable members of the
community.

Michael and Sophia Garoutte spent their married life in NJ, living at
Pleasant Mill and Tuckahoe. They had 13 children, all born in NJ, and
two of their sons served in the War of 1812, enlisting in Burlington
County, NJ. Michael died at Pemberton, NJ in 1829 and is buried there.

>From Ron Crawford:
Mike tells me that Michael Antoine attended school in Paris with the
future Marquis de Lafayette, and they became friends. When Lafayette
decided to come to America to fight for the new USA, Michael Antoine
came over with three of his family's ships, outfitted to fight at his
expense. He obtained letters of marque from the Continental Government
and fought at sea as a privateer for some time. At some point in time,
he also came ashore and fought on land. He was wounded in NJ, and taken
to a tavern near Philadelphia, owned by James Smith, Sophia's father.
She nursed him back to health, and they were later married. Gives us
another entry to DAR/SAR. Plus, Michael Antoine and his sons qualified
for the Society of the Cincinnati, which still exists, and I hope to
check their holdings on them. Sure there's much more interesting
history there! The Garouttes, of course, were also connected to landed
gentry families around Marseilles, and that's another place we might
look to at some time in the future.

"We know definitely that Michael Garoutte lived in NJ from the time he
landed in this country until his death in 1829; that all of his 13
children were born and married in NJ; that all his sons migrated to the
west -- Ohio, Indiana, Missouri and Iowa: and that after his wife's
death, according to notations in his Bible, he visited among his
children.

>From IRON IN THE PIPES: The Story of New Jersey's Ghost Towns and Bog
Iron, pp 203-204, Arthur D. Pierce, Rutgers University Press, New
Brunswick, New Jersey, 1957:
Despite the economic ups-and-downs of the cotton mill. the community had
expanded as more housing had been required for its employees and for
some of the ironworkers from Batsto. In 1854 there were 22 tenant
cottages, a "large store", and a tavern on the Pleasant Mills tract
itself, in addition to the Elijah Clark House. Earlier the tavern had
been kept by Michael Garoutte, about whom a romantic story is told. A
Frenchman, he had followed LaFayette to America to help the colonial
cause in the Revolution. After a skirmish in the Mullica region,
Garoutte had been left for dead by his comrades. He was discovered to
be alive by a girl from Pleasant Mills, who got him to her home and
nursed him back to health. In story-book fashion, he married her, and
they settled down in a house near the old millpond. In 1825 Garoutte
established a stage line to run from "Joseph English's Ferry, Camden, to
Leeds Point, opposite Bearmore's Beach, which is the most convenient
place at all times to pass to Long Beach, Tucker's Beach or
Brigantine." Garoutte adertised that his stages left Camden at 7:00
every morning, passing through Haddonfield and Long-a-Coming and halting
at Pleasant Mills for night loging -- at his own tavern, ofcourse! These
stages, the advertisement promised, reached Leeds Point "in time to pass
to any of the Beaches the next day." The fare was "the same as on the
Tuckerton route", which was $2. The "Tuckerton route" referred to ran
over the old Tuckerton Road, through Washington, about five miles north
of Pleasant Mills. These Leeds Point stages continued to run for many
years.

Mrs. Thiesen writes:
"It is generally understood that Michael was educated for the priesthood
and that he attended the same military schools as Lafayette, and that he
was highly educated. It is a fact that they were close friends, and at
the age of 25, in the year 1775, Michael Garoutte outfitted his own ship
and left his home in Marseilles and came to America to aid the Colonies
in gaining their independence."

"In 1775, Michael Garoutte outfitted one or two ships at Marseilles, at
his own expense and brought a large number of men to America to aid the
Colonists in their fight for freedom. He landed on the New Jersey shore,
probably near Pleasant Mills, and during the early years of the
Revolutionary War he assisted the colonial government. On account of the
burning of the New Jersey Archives covering this war period, we are
unable to obtain an authentic record of his help to the government but
it has been handed down and generally understood that he loaned money to
the government and outfitted and manned ships which he gave to the
government. One ship was burned and sunk by the British at the Mullica
river, at or near a place called Sand Point. A part of the wreck could
be seen at low tide within the last few years. One ship is said to have
been burned at Quebec. He was a volunteer officer on the brig
'Enterprise' and the sloop of war 'Race Horse'.

"Michael Garoutte was riding with a party of American and French
officers during fighting when they met a party of British officers. In
the fight that followed, Michael was wounded in the head and left for
dead. An old Quaker passing by with his wagon saw signs of life, carried
him home and nursed him back to life,
and Michael married his daughter, Sophia Smith."

"He never received a pension. The records of the Pension Bureau at
Washington, D.C. show that the pension he asked for was refused because
his service was on private ships instead of ships of the Continental
Government."

"The Michael Garoutte Story", KANSAS TREE SEARCHERS QUARTERLY, Vol. 5,
#3, July 1963

Some of the reports handed down in the Garoutte family say that Michael
was full-blooded, high-mettled Frenchman, with the generosity and
impulsiveness characteristic of his race. He cast his whole life, honor
and fortune with the uncertain issues of a foreign war, giving up his
country and life of ease that he might give all to our weak and
struggling nation. He sacrificed his estate by not returning to France
to live, although it is said that he received income from the estate in
France until about 1820.

When, after the Revolutionary War, LaFayette visited the United States
in 1784 and in 1824, he each time visited the Michael Garoutte family.
In this connection, Michael's great granddaughter May Garoutte Hart of
Portland, Oregon, gives this information: "My father, George Peterson
Garoutte, drove 20 miles in a phaeton to meet the Marquis de LaFayette,
and took him to his home to visit his father and grandfather on his
second visit to America. When they met they kissed each other and cried
with joy. I heard my father George P. Garoutte tell this to me." On
one visit it is said that LaFayette took little Samuel on his knee and
blessed him.
