Not often is a community called to mourn with a family so many of whom are our own friends and neighbors. But the mourning must end in consolation when we know the lost one has gone where "they'll never say, goodby."

Reported by the Grandaughter of GW, Esther Garrett Swanson (papers in possession of Mary Poore and Carol L Wolf Britton):

"G.W. Garrett's parents were Tommy and Susan Garrett, He had a paper mill and moved to IL when a young man. He married Delilah Luttrell. He was a farmer when first married, but was very handy with tools, could do carpenter work, blacksmith, made many of his own tools. In 1849 he and his brother Bryant started with a gorup of others for the gold fields being opened in Calif. Followed the Oregon Trail. Brother Bryant had red hair and Indians that they encountered didn't like red hair so he avoided being seen as much as possible. They found gold and returned to Illinois and purchased land. In 1856 they took a second trip which turned out about the same. On the second trip he sold equipment and went home by ship around the continent and up river. Helped pay expenses by making wagon spokes for others in the party...."
