HAMPTON LORING
John H. LORING was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, on Februry
23, 1819, died July 29, 1897 at the age of 86 years. He was the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Hampton LORING of Pennsylvania. Shortly after his birth his
father died. Some time after his death a Mr. JOHNSON of the same state
secured the consent of his mother for John H. LORING to make his home
with them. While he was yet a boy, he accompanied Mr. JOHNSON to Caro:
he assisted Mr. JOHNSON to clear a tract of timber in and near the same
town. His mother later married Mr. SQUIRES, a Minister of the Methodist
Church, where they made their home in Indiana, He had one half-sister,
Jane SQUIRES.
When John grew to manhood he came up the Illinois River to
Frederick where he became acquainted with the UTTER family. Later he
married Delilah UTTER. To this Union was born three sons, William,
Aberham, and Henry, who died in infancy. After nine years of wedded
life, his wife Delilah passed away.
Soon after his wife passed away, he decided to join some friends that were
going to California in search of gold. He went in 1849 when the gold rush
was
on. Leaving William - 8 years and Aberham - 6 with his brother-in-law, John
UTTER, he went down the Illinois River to the Mississippe River, then
crossing
the Ismas of
Pannama, they went by sail boat and it took months to go. He encountered
many hardships. The country was full of Indians at one time he was
attacked by a big Indian but managed to frighten him away.
After months of hardships he with his gold started for home. On the way
home he was caught in trade winds and for days drifted. Their water
became scarce, also food. One of the men with him became sick and the
sharks followed them. Then finally the man passed away and at midnight
they buried him at sea. Then the sharks left them. While they were
drifting at sea, the word came home that the boat and all the crew were
drowned. At home he was mourned as dead.
Then Lucinda ANNO, a sister of his first wife and widow of Tom ANNO, took
the two boys, William and Abe in her home with her two children, Clara
and Steve. She supported the family by weaving and being thrifty.
One morning Dupee CARTWRITE came riding up the Fredericck hill to the
home of Lucinda UTTER ANNO with the news John LORING was alive and coming
home.
He decided to buy the farm at Pleasantview which he paid for in gold. He
then married Lucinda and settled down to farming. To this Union was born
seven children, Dave, Jim, a twin dieing in infancy, Mary, Ed, Frank, and
John. When John was 14 his mother passed away. They also took to raise,
Salinda SIPES now STOCKWELL who was 8 years old at the time.
He was all alone with his family, most were grown to manhood and
womanhood. He again married Mrs. Drantha Cornelia KING of Canton he then
bought a home in Rushvville. At this time he was counted pretty well off
with this world's goods. He lived very happy, was very active in the
Methodist Church. He was always a man that stood for the right honest,
always on time. He belived in having a place for every thing and keeping
it there. His Motto Early to bed and early to rise makes man healthy
wealthy and wise when his third wife passed away March 28, 1895 leaving
him very lonely.
Delilah LORING went to live with him and cared for him. He passed away
July 29, 1897. He was a man to be proud of to call our ancestor.
Delilah married John AVERY 1898, he died same year, February 2, 1898.
