Sarah
SHERRILL(273) was born on 24 Oct
1746 in Augusta Co, VA. She died on 11 Jul 1826 in Wayne Co, KY. Sarah
was a year old infant, carried in her mother's arms when the family moved from
Augusta Co., VA to Rowan Co., NC in 1747. Those childhood years on the frontier
surrounded by many cousins, must have been happy ones. Sarah married young (age
16) as was the habit in those days, to Reuben Simpson. There is a record in
Rowan Co. on Aug. 26, 1762 of a deed for 221 acres of land on the west side of
the Catawba River, adjoining Isaac Perkins and Adam Perkins from Granville to
William Simpson. On Nov. 4, 1765, William Simpson of Rowan Co., NC deeded 72
acres on the west side of the Catawba River to Reuben Simpson.
On Oct. 19, 1768, Reuben Simpson and his wife, Sarah Sherrill, deeded this
same 72 acres to Griffith Rutherford. In Lincoln County, NC, Reuben entered
640 acres of land on the Beaver Dam Branch, Oct. 11, 1783. There is a branch
on the west side of the Catawba River about 5 miles above Granville's old line,
which is called Beaver Dam Branch. So there is a probability that Sarah had,
after seven years of marriage, established two homes.
We are fortunate that there is a tiny record book in which the records of
the Baptist Church on the Catawba were kept. It contains a record of Reuben
Simpson and Agnes Sherrill (probably Sarah's sister) joining the church. This
book Reuben took with him when he moved from the Catawba. It contains the recordsof
one of the earliest Baptist Churches in Wayne Co., KY, the Beaver Creek Baptist
Church. Reuben kept the records there. Also,
this little book is safe in the Rare Book Room at the University of Virginia
Library.
Sarah Sherril married Reuben Simpson and although Sarah was the daughter
of Capt. William Sherrill, a noted patriot, her husband, Reuben, was a Tory.
Reuben and William Simpson, brother, married daughter of Capt. William Sherrill,
a renowned Whig. Reuben was a Tory and William subscribed to the Whig conviction.
As a result a deep hatred arose between the two men.
Reuben fought for the British at the Battle of Ramsour's Mill. It is said
that Reuben Simpson was so unhappy after the war because of his Tory leanings,
that he and his family moved to the 96th district, Pendleton Co., SC. They were
listed there in the 1790 census. Around 1798-99 Reuben organized a train to
migrate to Kentucky where they settled in Wayne County. Most of their children
were grown and some of them were married by this time. Reuben and Sarah and
their children were among the first settlers in Wayne Co., KY> They settled
on Beaver Creek, southwest of Monticello, where the creek bottoms were wide and
covered with rich soil. reuben was a school teacher and his descendants were
always among the best educationed in the county.
What a terrible time it must have been for Sarah with her husband a Tory
and her family standing on the side of the Whigs. It is impossible for us to
imagine what she endured. It was not only emotional danger but the real physical
danger that Reuben would be killed by the Whigs. There is a story that his
brother rode his horse to exhaustion, then continued on foot in an effort to
get to Ramsour's Mill where Reuben was fighting for the Royalists. William wanted
legally to kill his brother in war.
There is no need to say more about the sorrow that must have surrounded
Sarah. She could not visit her parents or have them visit her. She and her
children were outcasts from the Sherrills. It is hard for us to realize the
mental anguish she much have suffered. History tells us the the Tories, who
would always be hated by the Whigs, often held in their hearts the hope that
they might settle in the west and join again with the mother country. We do
not know whether Reuben ever felt an allegiance to the newly formed republic.
However, after the scars of war have healed, there is always the problem of
feeding the family.

Rectors of Wayne Co., KY, 1975."

William
SHERRILL Sr.(273) was born on 16
Nov 1666 in England. He died in 1747 in TN. William Sherrill was known as "The
Conestoga Fur Trader" and was an early settler and Indian guide of some
repute in Lancaster Co., PA. He is credited with helping to open the Susquehanna
Valley to early settlers. In 1702 he purchased 150 acres know as Price's Forest
in Cecil Co., Maryland. In 1720 he was granted 200 acres of land called Three
Partners; deed book 5, pages 228-231. In December of 1725 he sold 100 acres
of this land to his son Adam.
From the Department of Community Affairs, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, a photocopy
of the original land Grand D-82--1147 reads as follows: By the Commissioners
of Property at the Request of William Sherrerd (Sherrell) that we would grant
him Two hundred Acres of Land on Pequea Creek for which he has agreed to pay

William Sherrell is of record in the original Chester County, PA (Chester Co.
wa later divided into Chester, Lancster and York Counties) and in 1718 he is
found in the new county of Lancaster, whose borders almost touch those of Baltimore
Co., Maryland.
According to "Historical Papers and addresses of the Lancaster Co. Historical
Society" Vol. XX, Lancaster, PA, 1911 William Sherrel was listed among the
English inhabitants in Conestoga Township in 1718. He was assessed 16 pounds,
4 pence and had 1100 acres on the river.
In the Conestoga Township, Lancaster Co., PA Tax Lists were the member of the
Sherrill family taxes as follows
1719 William Sherwill Taxed 20 pounds
1719 Rudil Sherwill Taxed 30 pounds
1720 William Sherwill Taxed 15 pounds
1720 Adam Sherwill Taxed 10 pounds
1721 William Sherwill Taxed 15 pounds
1721 Samuel Sherwill Taxed 12 pounds
1722 William Sherwill Taxed 16 pounds
1722 Adam Sherwill (Donegal Twp.) Taxed 16 pounds
It appears that William Sherrill returned to Cecil Co., Maryland in 1720, perhaps
retaining his property in PA for a few years, then abandoning it (1100 acres!).
In any event, he purchased land from Thomas Jacobs. It appears he actually
patented the land in 1720 land that had previously been pattented by Thomas Jacobs
on March 10, 1716, and then later purchased it from Jacobs.
From a rent roll in the Maryland archives in the following regarding "Three
Partners". Three Partners surveyed March 10, 1716 for Thomas Jacobs lying
in the CE. Co., Beginning at a Bounded black Oak standing on the West Side of
a path leading from Abraham Pennington to Connestogoe and in a line of a Tract
of Land Called Cornwall - to Addition
A portion of the action concerning this land follows:
200 acres William Sherrwill from Thomas Jacobs Dec. 13, 1725
100 acres Adam Sherwill from William Sherwill, Sr. June 6, 1729
100 acres William Sherwill, Jr. from William Sherwill, Sr. June 6, 1729
20 acres William Sherwill, Sr., from Adam Sherwill July 17, 1729
100 acres Samuel Caldwell from Adam Sherrill
100 acres John McCreery from William Sherwill, Jr. Aug. 221, 1744
Adam obtained 100 acres. The following month, he transferred 20 of these acres
back to his father. Then he sells 100 acres to Samuel Caldwell.
