On 1 Aug 1797, the Montgomery County, Va., court named Richard Guthrie guardian of Phebe and Elizabeth Skiles, and stated that Ephraim Skiles had died. Daniel Howe was security for the guardianship. On 1 Sept 1796 Mary Skyles, widow, married John Scott in Montgomery County. Edward Morgan, a Methodist minister, performed the ceremony. Scott's will, proved in 1809, named wife Mary and "her brother Richard Guthrie" as executors. The Will was witnessed by Joseph Skiles and Frederick Carper. (Book 1, page 381). Ephraim, as mentioned earlier, might have been the man who enlisted in the military service 25 Jul 1776 in the upper district of Frederick Countym which a few months later became Washington County. (Maryland Archives, V.18, page 15). Parents: EPHRIAM SKILES Sr and Rachel (SKILES).

bullet EPHRIAM SKILES Sr(50) (29) was born on 2 Mar 1719 in Cecil Co., MD. (300)(301) He died in 1790 in Greene Co, TN. Ephraim Skiles served in the French & Iniam War in Capt Jonathan Hager's company, Somerset Co. militia. He and his family lived on the outskirts of Calverton Manor in Charles Co., MD on a lease of 122 acres in 1762 and had lived there for at least two years according to a list of residents in the year 1762 which showed he owed two years rent. By 1783-84 he was listed on the taxlists of Hopewell, Bedford Co., PA. Sometime during the period 1784 to 1789, when Greene Co., TN was in the State of Franklin he removed there and names of some of his descendants were listed on the back of a deed recorded in the State of Franklin. His wife Rachel was given her one seventh share of his personal estate in Jan. of 1791, therefore we assume he had at least six living children at this time. The names found on the above mentioned deed or suit are Rachel Skiles; Mrs Secuton; Agnes Skiles; William Skiles; Jenny Skiles; William Skiles again; Adomejahi Morgan & Zuchel Skiles. We can only look for additional proofs for the connection as some mentions John , William Skiles Sr & Ephraim Skiles before 1810. (From Skiles/Skyles Family Bulleton.)

Washington County, Maryland records show Ephraim Skeles, Ephraim Skeles Jr, and William Skeles sighned the oath of allegiance to the revolutionary governement. Green county, Tennessee, probate records show that Rachael Skiles asked the court to grant her dower rights after Ephraim Sr.' s death about 1790. Rachael and Robert Campbell ("esquire") received letters of administration with Benjamin Crow and Shadrack McNew their sureties. Ephraim definitely was in Washington Co, MD, in 1785 so he apparently moved to Tennessee shortly thereafter.

Ephraim Skiles was born March 2, 1719 in Cecil County, Maryland. In 1892, a Miss Lucy H. Harrison copied the birth record from "Marriages, Births and Deaths" in St. Stephen's Parish in Cecil County. The record shows John to have been Ephraim's father. Ephraim married a woman named Rachel about 1740. Children: Agnes, William in 1749 or 1750, Jenny, Zuchel (Ezekiel?), Adamejahl, John in 1741 and Ephraim Junior and a daughter whose name is unknown. By 1751, the family lived in a part of Frederick County, Maryland,
that is now Washington County. Bruebaugh's "Maryland County Records" shows in volume 1, on page 26, that Ephraim Skiles signed a lease dated June 13, 1762, agreeing to pay annual rent of 1/2/5 for 122 acres in "his Lordship's Manor Conegocheque." Fines were due totaling 2/8/10 and the "incumberence of live and age" was given as 21 years. It was further noted that "this lot lies almost without the minor line."

There is confusion about which Ephraim enlisted in the army in 1776. Some researchers say it was Ephraim, Senior, then about 57 years old. But Ephraim, Junior, was old enough the next year to marry a 17-year-old girl, so it's likely that it was Ephraim, Junior, who enlisted. Washington County records show that Ephraim Skeles, Ephraim Skeles, Junior and William Skeles signed the oath of allegiance to the Revolutionary government.

On October 15, 1785, Ephraim gave a deposition in a land dispute and this document was introduced in the Washington County court on November 28. Ephraim gave his age 66 and said that about 34 years earlier, when Salisbury Plains was surveyed, the boundary in dispute was adjacent to Ephraim's plantation. Frederick County records show no land transactions in Ephraim's name, so perhaps his plantation was recorded in the old Prince George's County records, which have not been searched.

Greene County, Tennessee, probate records show that Rachael Skiles asked the court to grant her dower rights after Ephraim, Senior, died about 1790. Rachael and Robert Campbell ("Esquire") received letters of administration with Benjamin Crow and Shadrack McNew their sureties. Ephraim definitely was in Washington County, Maryland, in 1785 so perhaps he moved to Tennessee shortly thereafter. Nothing more is known of Rachel. (Ephraim was son of John and grandson of Thomas Junior)
