He went with the California Gold Rush when he was 23 years old (1849). He came back via the Oregon trail across Nebraska. All the way home, he skinned dead bulls he came across, so had a big pile of skins when he got back.

He had not taken off his clothes since leaving California, because he did not want anyone to see that he had a money belt with about $8000 worth of gold strapped around his body. When he finally took off the money belt, he found that it had dug in
his flesh right to the hip bone. When it healed, it left a scar that remained for the rest of his life.

He bought a farm with rich black soil and spent the rest of his life there.

Will of Elizabeth in 1765 and Vol. 3 of Somerset Accounts p 380-381. Thomas Skiles Jr. sold land on the north side of the Wicomico River, known as "Nobles Quarter" 24 Dec 1698.

Mrs Neeseman list as references...She states that Thomas Skiles Jr. sold land on the north side of the Wicomico River known as Nobles Quarter Dec. 24, 1698 and was mentioned in many deeds with neighbor Thomas Dashiell. Dashiell's 1709 deed to Samuel Worthingtion describes land on the south side of the Nanticoke River, in Quantico neck, on the west side of Quantico Creek adjoining Thomas Skiles. In 1726 Dashiell bought Fathers's Purchase from Charles Larne. The land is described as on the west side of Skiles Creek and formerly belonged to Richard Crockett. Mres Neeseman also cites the Stepney Parish records (available on film) as sources.

Second Generation ...

Thomas Skiles, Junior was born November 12, 1668 in the Wicomico section of Somerset County, Maryland. About 1688 he married a woman named Naomi. Children: Alice, in 1689, Elizabeth in 1692, Sarah in 1695, John in 1697, Henry about 1699 and William in 1701. On December 24, 1698, Thomas sold Nobles Quarter on the north side of the Wicomico River. He also was mentioned in many deeds with neighbor Thomas Dashiell. Dashiell's deed in 1709 to Samuel Worthington describes land on the south side of the Nanticoke River in Quantico Neck, on the west side of Quantico Creek adjoining Thomas Skiles. In 1726 Dashiell bought Father's Purchase from Charles Larne; the deed says the land was ont he west side of Skiles creek and had once belonged to Richard Crockett. He arrievedd in Maryland in 1664 and was in the Wicomico Section of Somerest in 1664. He immigrated on 28 May 1645 to Virginia Colony. On ship Speedwell of London. First Generation ...

Thomas SKILES owned a "plantation...just south of the present town of Whitehaven, Maryland, in Wicomico County," according to "Old Somerset on the Eastern Shore of Maryland", by Clayton Torrence. According to researcher, Floy Neeseman, Thomas was living there in August 1666.

Thomas married a woman named Alice and had three children: Thomas Jr. in 1668, Elizabeth in 1671 and John in 1673. All were born in Wicomico section of Somerset County. Alice probably died before Thomas as she is not mentioned in his will, which is recored in Somerset. Floy records Thomas's date of death as 1676; Researcher Rosemary Hansell lists it as 1675, and states that Thomas was a farmer and a member of the Church of England, Stepney Parish.

Mrs Neeseman lists the following references: Maryland Magazine of history, Vol 30: 323; Torrence's Book--pages 280, 349 and 468; Somerset birth and mariages (available in Salt Lake on microfilm); Somerset wills (liber E.B. #5, folio 162) and "notes from Maryland Archives printed series." Mrs. Hansell spells the name Shiall.
