bulletMaria Guadalupe De Leon was born on 29 May 1917 in Gil de Leyva, NL, Mexico. She died on 30 Jan 1998 in Harlingen, Texas. She was buried on 3 Feb 1998 in Loma Linda Cemetery in Harlingen, Texas. Mother outlived father by 30 years almost to the day. Mother was a very energetic woman; she liked and loved some of her children and loved her grandchildren. She was a devout Catholic. I loved making her laugh; she had a great sense of humor and had a blunt way of putting things into perspective; however offensive, most of the time she did hit the nail on the head. I miss her when I see alot of plants, for she loved them so, I miss her when I see Destiny smile so happily; I wish she was here to see all of her beautiful grandchildren; and to visit with her just one more time to see her laugh till she had to run to the restroom!!!!
The following was written by Margarita Luna-Quintanilla based on her memories of our mother: remembering not the negative, but the almost positive, and sometimes negative. Mom is gone. Many, many things were done wrong, but many things wre done right, both were for our good. Not all the kids have the same memory, most have this negative and abusive recollection of our upbringing. I choose to recall a little of each, the little that I canI remember. During the time of our upbringing, not different from now, both parents sometimes had to work to provide what they needed for the family. I remember mother cleaning houses and ironing, for others, both white and Mexican people. I do not remember who they were, but I seem to recall that some of the ladies were very nice, some were not. We use to get Christmas gifts from them, like food and used clothes. I remember going with her and how pretty the house was where she was cleaning, how different it looked than ours. I was not envious, but thinking one day I will have a house just like that. Mom worked so hard for these people. I remember mom working at that the shrimp place. That horrible, horrible, terrible, ugly stinking smell. She wore that uniform, that white dress and that hair net, everyday, during the shrimp season. Yaya used to work there, too.
I remember listening to mom and dad in the kitchen, those early mornings making breakfast and their lunches I could hear their laughter, that thought gives me a sense of security.
I remember mom buying stuff from the door to door salesman (el droma), she would buy anything and everything from dishes to bedspreads, she probably still has one or two of these bedspreads. I remember the designs on them. She would not bother dad for money for these things. That was the reason she worked, to provide such things for the house. I remember mom taking us to work up north. She was a tough person. There was not two ways about, we were doing, whether we wanted or not. She worked right along with us. I remember one time when she got real sick in the field, she might have sufferered a heat stroke, or a heart attack, we will never know, or choose not to remember. I remember that belt and the face she would make when she used it on us. How well I remember that face. I remember having maids, because mom was working. I think dad would have preferred her to stay at home. Some I liked, some I did not. I did dislike one very much. I remember having a fight with her, but today I do not recall why. I remember when my dad died, they offered us welfare, she refused. Those were some dark days for mom, if she was depressed before, now it was worse. I remember her lying on the couch, after drinking liquor (I think or I do not want to remember). That is a thought I wishing to have. It hurts. I remember her getting sick and having her gallbladder taken out and her not resting when the doctor told her to. I remember her going back to work too soon, and later paying the price with a hernia, and more sugery. She needed to work. I remember when mom would get the seizures, it was scary. I remember sleeping with her and being afraid that she would suffer a seizure.

I remember taking her to visit a relative, she was happy doing that. We would go to Corpus, San Antonio, McAllen, Brownsville, and even Matamoros. That made me real happy. I remember her calling me and how sometimes she sounded depressed and lonley, that was real hard, and I was too far to be there. I remember her calling and sounding happy because one of her kids had come to visit or called. That brought joy to my ears. I remember coming down to visit and taking her to Mexico or just to visit someone. I also remember how sad it was to leave, watching her waving, how hard that was. I remember her visits and her taking care of my kids. She would make tamales, menudo, and other dishes. I remember coming to visit and having gorditas waiting, she knew what we liked.

I remember calling her and her cutting the calls short, later to find out she had a boyfriend. Those were also some happy times for her, after years and years of being alone. I remember receiving a call that mom was in the hospital and very ill, and having open heart surgery. Well, she pulled out of this, thank God. I remember coming to see her at the nursing home, how different and thin she looked, that was after some strokes. I remember her at Patty's wedding, she really enjoyed that, not wanting to leave until midnight. I remember her health failing more each day. I remember the calls when she was taken to the hospital, once, twice, and three times. I remember the third time, how terrible, she was not going to make it. I remember all the family being here with her, how happy she was. I remember how angry she got at me for not taking her home. I could not, mom, as much as I wish I could have. I remember visiting her at the nursing home that last week, she had fever and diarrhea. I remember her at the hospital, and her smile at Lisa. I remember the last day, I was there at 7:30am, her stomach was bloated. I held her hand and stroked her hair. Something was wrong. I remember her raising her hand to her mouth, she could not talk. I remember feeding her breakfast and talking to her. That morning she ate. Then lunch, she ate less, much less. I prayed and held her hand, they were turning purple. She was getting weaker and weaker as the day went by. By late that afternoon the time was near. I remember her having trouble breathing and her holding her stomach, from the pain she was obviously feeling, but unable to convey. I remember her blank stare, she was not responding to us anymore. I remember them giving her oxygen and something for pain and slowly, slowly her breaths got shallower, and shallower and slower and slower. I remember watching her breathe, I remember her eyes fixed. I remember closing them for her. I remember praying to God for mercy. I remember holding her thin, oh so thin hands. I remember knowing that she was gone. I remember the chaplain praying as my mom's body gave up her soul. I remember.

bullet Alfonso Luna was born on 27 Mar 1915 in Cruz Verde Nuevo Leon, Mexico. He emigrated on 1 Oct 1953 from Mexico. Father and Mother emigrated into the United States gradually in the early '40's; with the birth of each child they had; mother and father hoped for a better way of life, so some of us were born in the U.S. and some of you weren't. He died on 9 Feb 1968 in Harlingen, Texas. He was buried on 13 Feb 1968 in Loma Linda Cemetery in Harlingen, Texas. He is a City Parks and Recreation(mowed park lawns, cleaned debri from parks, supervised others) 1958-1968 (approximation) in Harlingen, Texas. Father was a hard working man. I remember him helping mother with the cooking; I remember how he loved to do the yard and keep the plant watered and in full bloom. I remember he worked for the City of Harlingen Parks Dept., and I remember that we lived in the Lon C. Hill home in exchange for father being the caretaker of the place. We lived at this house for quite a few years; father use to take Freddy and Jr. on rides in the Tractor that the City let him use for work. Father had a good sense of humor like mom did. There were some bad times (who doesn't), but mostly I remember the good times; how father liked to pull pranks on mom and Pelais. Father was a provider; in the short time that I knew him, I remember the pride he showed on his face when he became an American Citizen. I wish he had lived to meet the rest of his grandchildren; he would've loved them all!!!

Speaking of Children: here are some stats for you. Father and Mother had 13 children; of the 13; 11 were born alive and of the 11; 10 of us are still here. There are 18 years, 9 months and 10 days between Carmen #1 and Freddys' birthdates. The shortest period between our births was between me and Ricky (1 yr 2 mo 22 da), then between Elvia and Linda (1 yr 3 mo 30 days). The oldest and youngest daughters are the only two with straight hair.

The five oldest siblings have been married 20 years or more to the same spouse; on the other the 4 of the 5 youngest have been divorced at least once from their first partners, but have married other partners since their divorces.

There are other interesting stats, but that's another "book".

I really hope you enjoy reading these few pages and that you add more of your own if you like, (please no mudslinging, OK) (just kidding). Parents: Juan Luna and Francisca Cantu.

I remember pulling some kind of prank on each and everyone of you. I remember getting it from each and everyone of you too. Ricky was my favorite brother when it came to playing pranks. I have great memories of those times....
Yaya was my caretaker. I remember whenever I came home from the hospital in casts, some of you had to help feed me and carry me to the restroom. Thanks to all of you for helping.
