years old.
She appeared on the census in 1860 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. Sally was listed under her name "Sarah", and in addition to herself, her household consisted of Levi (28), Chambers (25), Nancy Kemp (46), Sally Kemp (19), William Kemp (18) and Adaline Sawyer (15). She appeared on the census in 1870 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. She was living alone, next door to the family of Mathis and Emiline Kemp. She died about 1871 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. Sally's exact death date is unknown, however she was listed in the 1870 census and her estate was settled in 1872. Lindsey Jarvis was her administrator. Equal portions of her estate were given to John N. Jarvis, Nancy Kemp, H. C. Jarvis, William Jarvis, Noah Jarvis, the heirs of W. Jarvis, and Lindsey Jarvis. Another portion was divided among grandchildren, including William Jarvis heirs, Lindsay Jarvis heirs, Decius Jarvis, Sarah Jarvis, James M. Jarvis, J. C. Jarvis, Caroline Jarvis, and Liddia Privett. Sally suffered the misfortune to lose two of her sons to the Civil War. Levi died April '63 at Richmond; Wilie died July '63 in Virginia. Parents: John Chambers and Nancy "Ann" McBride. (85) James Jarvis (probably his brother, but possibly his father)

age.

(90) He died about 1900 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina.(8) (4) Family relatives in Wilkes Co., NC said he had a heart attack after crossing a fence by going up and over the steps that had been built at the crossing. William appears as a witness of his uncle John J. Jarvis' will. According to her descendant, Ruthi Barth, he "was also a MOONSHINER. To many of the residents of Wilkesboro, "The One-Time Moonshine Capital of the World", moonshining was considered respectible although illegal. Many of the farmers in the hills could not raise enough corn to make it a profitable crop. They felt that the "flatlanders" had passed laws against moonshining just to hassle them." On the 1860 Wilkes Co. census, William Chambers had $100 real estate and $50 in personal estate value. He later owned a much larger farm. He could not read or write. An interesting story about Will as told in 1977 by one of his grandsons goes as follows: One morning when Will came out to feed his stock, he noticed one of his hired hands standing by the grainery. After he fed the animals, he noticed the man was still standing there so he invited him in for some breakfast. The man declined and then told him that his hand was caught. Will then released the trap he had set for whoever had been stealing his corn and had no further problems with missing corn after that! Parents: James Chambers and Elizabeth "Betsey" Ranney.
