She was high tempered and would pop her hands loudly when angry. One of her grandsons saw her in about 1915 and remembers her as a wiry, little old lady in the hills of North Carolina with VERY dark skin and smoking a CORN-COB PIPE.

Once when she was very old, she came with her daughter, Clara (Chambers) Sides,
who she lived with from Mocksville, NC to visit at her son Jim's place near Spencer, NC. They had rode out on an old covered wagon with two mules pulling it. Maranda had on high-button shoes and fell feet first into a hole that had been dug for an outhouse. It was only a couple of feet deep and full of mud but came up to her knees. She didn't get hurt.
