bullet Hannah Jarvis was born on 3 Aug 1804 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. (152)(18) She may be named after her grandmother, Hannah Johnson. Hanna's birthdate is derived from the 1830 census (where she is married to Elijah Longbottom), and her age in James Jarvis's houshold in earlier censuses which would seem to place her birth between 1800 and 1805.

She appeared on the census in 1830 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. Elijah and Hannah's household consisted of 1 male 20-29, 1 female 20-29, and 1 male under 5.

bullet Israel Jarvis was born in 1814 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. Israel's age in the 1850 census (36), implies that he was born in 1814. It is likely that the unusual (in the Jarvis family, at least) name Israel, was in honor of his uncle, Israel Johnson.
He appeared on the census in 1840 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. The 1840 census indicates that James Jarvis (Sr.) has a couple of older children with two young girls, born between 1835 and 1840. Israel, his wife, Nancy, and another daughter were probably living in James Sr.'s household in 1840.

He purchased 163 acres from James Jarvis for $300 on 16 Jan 1843 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina.(195) The land on the North side of Hunting Creek was described as "Beginning on a White Oak on the bank of Hunting Creek on Moses Mitchell's corner then North one hundred and thirty one poles to a post oak thence West two hundred and thirty poles to a White Oak thence South eighty nine poles to a pine on the bank of said Creek thence down the same as it meanders to the Beginning."

He received a deed as a gift from James Jarvis on 29 Jul 1843 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina.(196) It read "Know all men by these presents that I James Jarvis now in perfect mind and memory do by these presents give and bequeath unto my son Israel Jarvis all my estate real and personal which estate he shall have and possess with all its increase after my death. This deed I now give and confirm unto the said Israel Jarvis with his heirs forever given under my hand and seal this 29th July 1843."

The gift deed was witnessed by William Goforth and Alfred Warren.

He appeared on the census in 1850 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. Israel's household consisted of Elizabeth (34), and children Nancy (14), James (8), Enoch (4), and Elizabeth (2). Also in his household were Elizabeth Rash (65) and Mary Rash (22). Elizabeth may be his mother-in-law, however Israel's marriage record has not yet been found by the author and cannot be confirmed.

He registered a deed to Abel Cass in 1850 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina.
He sold 22 acres on 1 Jun 1850 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. (197) The land was sold to Abel Cass for $28.00, and was described as "beginning on the north bank of Hunting creek on a birch sapling then 17 degrees west 53 rood to a Spanish oak on the James Hollis spring branch near the spring then west 118 rood to a rock on Polly Rush's line then south 3 rood to the Hunting down the meanders of said creek to the beginning."

He sold 125 acres on 6 Jul 1853 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. The land, sold to E.B. Cass, is described as "Beginning on a white oak Moses Mitchell's corner bank of Hunting creek thence north one hundred thirty one poles formerly a post oak which has rotten down and has been made on a black oak a little west which is marked as a corner, thence west two hundred poles poles to a pine thence south eighty six poles to a rock A. Cass corner near said creek, thence east one hundred and eighteen rood to a spanish oak, thence south 17 deg east fifty three rood to a birch Abel Cass' corner on the bank of said creek thence down said creek to the above named Mitchell's corner containing one hundred twenty five acres more or less." This is a portion of the 163 acres purchased from James Jarvis in 1843.

Parents: James Jarvis and Elizabeth Johnson.

He was married to Elizabeth . Children were: Nancy Jarvis, James Jarvis, Enoch Jarvis, Elizabeth Jarvis.

bullet J. Harrison Jarvis Jarvis was born in 1894 in Yadkin Co., North Carolina. (171) Parents: Pinkney Jarvis and Mary E. Privett.

He was married to Mamie Speaks.

bullet James Jarvis Jr. was born on 17 Jan 1812 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. (154) He purchased 150 acres on 22 Jan 1839 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. The land was purchased from James Nicholson for $150. James may have been his father-in-law, but that is still unknown. The land was described as "beginning at a black oak on the bank of Hunting creek running north two hundred and one poles to a rock or a red oak sprout in John Jarvis's line then west forty four poles to a post oak John Jarvis corner then north with Jarvis line one hundred four poles to a pine then west with Jarvis's line crossing said creek eighty six poles to a spanish oak then south one hundred four poles to a poplar in Joel Lunsford's line then east with said line one hundred forty two poles to a post oak sapling on a ridge at Lunsford corner then south with Lunsford line seventy poles to the bank of little creek then with meander of said creek to it's mouth then down Hunting creek as it meanders to the beginning.

He appeared on the census in 1840 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. James Jarvis Jr. appears between the households of James Jarvis Sr. and John Coleman. His household consists of 1 male under 5, 1 male 5-9, 1 male 15-19, 1 male 20-29, 1 female under 5, 1 female 5-9, 1 female 20-29. Although he is listed as "Jr.", next to James Jarvis Sr., he is not his son but rather his grandson, as is evident by his age and the fact that James Jarvis Jr. lives some distance away on Pipe Camp creek. James is definately the son of John Jarvis and Sarah Chambers as evidenced by the close correspondence of the ages of his children in the census and the fact that each of his children also received a share of the inheritance of Sarah Chambers Jarvis, the only "grandchildren" of John and Sarah to do so.

He School census on 25 May 1841 in Hunting Creek, Wilkes Co., North Carolina. (40) The census lists James Jarvis Jr. with children John, Dicey.

He appeared on the census in 1850 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. James if listed with his wife Lyddia and their children Dianner (18), John (16), William (15), James (8), Sarah (6), Lyddia (4), and Lindsey (1). Interestingly, of the seven households listed between John Jarvis and James Jarvis in the 1850 census, four belong to Nicholsons. They are Abel (32), William (30), James (53), and Wilborn (51). It is tempting to speculate that these are Lyddia's brothers and sisters, as she was 41 at the time.

He appeared on the census in 1860 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. Their household in 1860 consisted of James (18), Sarah (16), Lydia (14), Lindsey (12), and Caroline (10).

He appeared on the census in 1870 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. The household contained James and Lyddia with Sally (25), Caroline (18), a male Nicholson age 12 and a female Brown, age 4.

He died on 1 Dec 1870 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. (18) Sally Chambers Jarvis' probate records of 1873 do not list James, but instead award amounts to his children, corroborating the death date of about Dec 1870.

Parents: John J. Jarvis and Sarah 'Sally' Chambers.

He was married to Lyddia Nickelson on 22 May 1831 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. (198) Children were: Dianna "Dicey" Jarvis, John C. Jarvis, William Jarvis, James McBride Jarvis, Sarah Jarvis, Lydia J. Jarvis, Lindsey Jarvis, Caroline C. Jarvis.

bullet James Jarvis was born in 1766.(199) James' birthdate is based on his age at death, as reported in the 1850 census mortality schedule.

Jarvis does not appear in the Land Entry books opened when the county was organized in March 1778. Nor does a Jarvis appear in the DAR's list of revolutionary war soldiers from Wilkes. From the lack of earlier records, and James' youthful age in 1787, it appears that he arrived in the area shortly before the 1787 census, probably from elsewhere in North Carolina or Virginia. The state census also included Jarvis families in neighboring Surry Co., including John Jarvis, Jabez Jarvis, Reziah Jarvis, and Elipholet Jarvis. Further research may link James to one of these families.

He appeared on the census in 1787 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. James and a female are listed in the 1787 census as between 21 and 60 years of age, with no children and no blacks in the household. Based on their lack of children, it is very likely that they were recently married and of a fairly young age. According to the 1850 mortality schedule, James would have been 21 years old at the time of the state census.

He appeared on the census in 1790 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. James' household was listed in the "Fifth Company", with three males under 16 and a female. Also living in the same area, based on the order which they appeared in the census, were four Chambers families and five Lunsford families, and other ancestors of Jarvis spouses including Roberts, McBride, Brown, Mise (Mize?) and Johnson (including his father-in-law, Charles Johnson).

He appeared on the census in 1800 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. James' household consisted of 1 male 0-9, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 26-45, 4 females 0-9, and 1 female 26-45. The older male children were John, and James Jr., whose ages are known from later census records. The younger male child was probably Charles, who must have been born in 1790. Three of the four female children were Alice, Elizabeth and Ann. These Jarvis women were married during the years 1817 through 1823, and are the earliest female Jarvis's listed in marriage records. It is very unlikely that they are daughters of another Jarvis, since no other Jarvis is listed in the 1800 census of Wilkes Co. Also, their names are the same as the names of three of their mother's sisters. The two families were evidently close, James Jarvis is listed four houses away from his father-in-law Charles Johnson in 1800.

He received a grant of 50 acres on 8 Apr 1800 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. (200) The deed reads "On Ausbons (sic, prob. Osborne's) creek at a stake in William Mitchel's line near said creek, running north crossing said creek ninety poles to a stake by the end of ____, then west cossing said creek ninety poles to a post oak in Nicholson's line, then south ninety poles to a hickory in said Mitchel's line, east with said line to the beginning." This is the ealiest deed of land recorded to a Jarvis in Wilkes Co.

James was also a deed witness on 12 October 1789 and 30 January 1790, in matters related to property held by neighbors, indicating that he may have lived on rented or other purchased property prior to receiving this grant. The deed books also include an entry dated 3 October 1802 which may refer to other property. "Deed between William Johnson, Esq. (Sheriff) and John Little, Rowan Co., N.C. (property lost by David Grant to satisfy John Little) 295 ac waters Hunting Creek, joining Iredell Co. line and lines John Lunceford and James Jarvis...Elijah Luncefords line...Hulins line...Walter Welch's line...Pinkston's line". Grant is not mentioned in the 1800 grant as adjoining Jarvis's property, so Jarvis may have owned another piece of property.

He appeared on the census in 1810 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. James' household in the 1810 census consisted of 1 male 0-9 (William), 2 males 16-25 (John, Charles), 1 male 45 and older, 4 females 0-9, 2 females 10-15, 1 female 16-25, and 1 female 26-45. James Jr. was married in 1809, and is no longer in the household, although he still lives in Wilkes Co., he appears to have been missed in the census or is living in another household. Records concerning the females in the family are much less certain, however no marriages are recorded prior to this census. The three eldest daughters are Alice, Elizabeth and Ann, and three of the four youngest are Hannah, Lyddia and Betsy.

He appeared on the census in 1820 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. James' household in the 1820 census consisted of 3 males 0-9, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 45 and older, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 16-25, 1 female 26-45, and 1 female 45 and older. Charles, John, and James Junior were married and absent from James Sr.'s household and were listed separately with their own families in the census. Alice and Elizabeth were married, and presumably also absent from the household. Ann was therefore the daughter in the 26-45 age group, Hannah was the daughter in the 16-25 group, and Betsy was probably the 10-15 year old. The male in the 10-15 bracket was William. The youngest sons are believed to be Israel Jarvis, who is given land by James; Nelson Jarvis, who married a daughter of James' neighbor John Brown and later moved to Indiana like Charles and Hannah; and Levi, who appears in the 1840 census and is of the right age. Levi also disappears from Wilkes Co after 1840.

He registered a deed to William Ball in 1827 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. James' daughter Hannah married Imlah Ball about this time, however James and William lived near each other and this may simply have been a sale of land between the two as neighbors with no other significance.

He appeared on the census in 1830 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. James' household in the 1830 census consisted of the 3 young boys (2 males 10-14, 1 male 15-19, probably Israel, Nelson, and Levy), 1 male 20-29, 1 male 60-69, 1 female 15-19, 2 females 20-29, and 1 female 60-69. One of the 20 year old females may be Betsy. The oldest male child and the other older female may be William and his wife Sally Dillard, who were married in 1830 immediately prior to the census but do not appear separately in the census. The younger female child could be Lyddia, however it is interesting to note that no female child of that age appeared in the 1820 census, therefore she may be a servant, niece, etc.

He appeared on the census in 1840 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. He was listed as James Jarvis Sr., and appeared between William Ball and James Jarvis Jr. on the census schedule. His household consisted of 1 male 20-29, 1 male 70-79, 2 females under 5, 2 females 20-29, and 1 female 70-79. Since his son Israel was married before this census and had at least one daughter, Nancy - but doesn't appear elsewhere in the census - the young male and female and at least one of the two female children are probably the Israel Jarvis family. Evidently Israel took care of James and Elizabeth in their old age, as James left Israel all of his real estate holdings at his death.

James also left his furniture and some livestock to his daughter Lucy. The only Lucy found in the 1850 census was born in 1833, which would mean that Elizabeth was in her fifties at the time of Lucy's birth. This seems unlikely, however there is no other explanation, and it would fit the census records if Lucy is assumed to be the other young female child. She is living in the household of John Jarvis in 1850, but is not one of his children named in his will, completed three years earlier.

He sold 47 acres to John Jarvis on 11 Jun 1842 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. (201) The land is believed to be James Sr's based on the names of the neighbors, compared to a positively identified sale of his land in 1849. The land, on the waters of Pipe Camp branch, was described as "Beginning in James Rash's line near said Pipe Camp branch on a Black Oak running East eighty poles to a stake in said John Jarvis' own line thence North eighty poles to a Pine, thence West eighty eight poles to a stake in James Rash's line, thence South eighty poles with said James Rash's line to the Beginning.

He sold 163 acres to Israel Jarvis on 16 Jan 1843 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. (202) The land on the North side of Hunting Creek was described as "Beginning on a White Oak on the bank of Hunting Creek on Moses Mitchell's corner then North one hundred and thirty one poles to a post oak thence West two hundred and thirty poles to a White Oak thence South eighty nine poles to a pine on the bank of said Creek thence down the same as it meanders to the Beginning."

He gave a deed to Israel Jarvis on 29 Jul 1843 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. (203) It read "Know all men by these presents that I James Jarvis now in perfect mind and memory do by these presents give and bequeath unto my son Israel Jarvis all my estate real and personal which estate he shall have and possess with all its increase after my death. This deed I now give and confirm unto the said Israel Jarvis with his heirs forever given under my hand and seal this 29th July 1843."

The gift was witnessed by William Goforth and Alfred Warren.

He gave a deed to Lucy Jarvis on 29 Jul 1843 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. (204) It read "Know all men by these presents that I James Jarvis Sen. now in perfect mind and memory do by these presents give and bequeath unto my daughter Lucy Jarvis one cow and one sow and one ___ and two beds and furniture which property I give and bequeath with all its increase to the said Lucy Jarvis to dispose of at her own will given under my hand and seal this 29th July 1843."

The gift was witnessed by William Goforth and Alfred Warren.

He sold 60 acres to Richard Walker on 23 Jan 1849 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. (205) The land was described as lying on Hunting Creek. "Beginning at a Chestnut tree in John Jarvis line then running north with David Rash's line 160 poles to a red oak thence west 60 poles to a stake thence south 160 poles to a stake in James Rash's line thence east 60 poles with James Rash's line and John Jarvis as they meander to the beginning." The deed was signed by James (indicating he could write) and witnessed by James Chambers and James Jarvis Jr. Interestingly, in 1852, the land was purchased from Walker by James Chambers' wife Elizabeth, and remained in the Chambers family for 35 years.

He died in May 1850 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. (206) A James Jarvice, (sic) aged 84, appears in the 1850 Mortality Schedule of the U.S. Census. According to the record, he died of disentery. The mortality schedule also indicates that he was married at the time of his death. An Elizabeth "Jarvice", (sic) aged 77, also appears in the 1850 Mortality Schedule. She died in October 1849 of Dropsy, and was listed in the schedule as a widow. Her age would place her in James' generation, however if she were his wife then she would not have been a widow at the date of her death, and would have also been listed in a younger age bracket in the earlier censuses. It is possible that the
Mortality Schedule information (presumably given by a family member or neighbor to the census taker) is incorrect and that Elizabeth was truly James wife. If the schedule is correct and James was married one month prior to the census, then it should be possible to locate Elizabeth in the census - however she is not found in the 1850 census. Therefore, it is probably that the Elizabeth listed in the Mortality Schedule was, in fact, James' wife and that the months or ages were misremembered by the individual who gave the information to the census taker. Another possibility is that James died in May of 1849, in which case he would indeed have been married at the time of his death and Elizabeth would have been a widow at her death.

He was married to Elizabeth Johnson about 1786. No marriage record has yet been found. However, the will of Charles Johnson identifies his daughter Elizabeth as a Jarvis, and other evidence ties the two families together closely. for example, the will was witnessed by Charles Jarvis, son of James and Elizabeth, and was dated 1816. In that year, only four married Jarvises were resident in Wilkes Co.; James Jarvis and his three sons. The three sons' wives are known from reliable records, therefore Elizabeth can only be the wife of James Jarvis. It would also be logical based on her probable age.

The date of the marriage of James and Elizabeth is inferred from the birthdate of their first child, and their apparent ages at that time.

James and Elizabeth lived in the Hunting Creek area of Wilkes Co. all of their married lives (over sixty years) and raised their children in that immediate area. Through the early 1800's they lived close to their children and the large extended family of in-laws, neices, nephews, and cousins. However, possibly due to a shortage of new land for the growing population, the Jarvis children underwent something of a dispersal in the decade between 1840 and 1850. Charles and Hannah migrated to the recently opened frontier in Indiana with their families. Elizabeth and her family moved west to Buncombe County. Ann's family began moving south and west, eventually reaching Arkansas by the early 60's and later Texas. Betsy has not been traced following her marriage to John Howard, and is believed to have migrated with the Howards. By 1850, according to census records, only John, the oldest son, James, William, and Israel remained behind, and Israel appears to have sold his land and left in the early 1850's. James (through his son Welmoth), and John and William, through their large families, gave rise to the Jarvis clan in Wilkes Co in the mid to late 1800's.

Children were: John J. Jarvis, James Jarvis Esq., Charles Jarvis, Ann Jarvis, Alice Jarvis, Elizabeth "Betsy" Jarvis, Hannah Jarvis , William "Bill" Jarvis, Lyddia Jarvis, Betsy Jarvis, Israel Jarvis, Nelson Jarvis, Levy Jarvis, Lucy JARVIS.

bullet James Jarvis Esq. was born in 1789 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. The date of James' birth is derived from the 1850 and earlier census records.

He purchased 240 acres on 27 Nov 1812 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. The land was purchased from Christopher Monday for 100 pounds. Two tracts were involved, on pipe creek. The deed describes the land as "two hundred acres of land in Wilkes County lying on pipe camp creek beginning at a pine running west one hundred and thirty four poles to a white oak by a field north twenty poles to a post oak west one hundred poles to a white oak south crossing said creek one hundred forty eight poles to a red oak east two hundred and thirty four poles to a stake in Garrison's line north crossing said creek to the beginning. Second tract or parcel of land lying in and being in the county of and state aforesaid on the waters of pipe camp creek containing forty acres or supposed to contain. Beginning on David Thornbing's west corner at a stake running with Charles Johnson's line then with Christopher Monday's to include the said stand."

He appeared on the census in 1820 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. James' household included 2 males under 10 (Welmoth & Joseph), 1 male 26-45 (James), 4 females under 10 (Jincy, Jennet, Elizabeth, ?), and 1 female 26-45 (Liddia).

He purchased 100 acres on 26 Dec 1823 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. (207) The land was purchased from John Walker for $80, and was described as "beginning on a red oak on the north side of pipe camp branch and on ____ line between John Walker and Levi Rash dec running east eighty eight poles to a stake then eighty poles to a pine then west sixty poles to a chestnut the north one hundred and sixty poles to a red oak then west ____ poles to a stake then south one hundred poles to a poplar then west fifty poles to a stake in a conditional line the said Walker and Jarvis then south thirty poles to a stake then east ninety four poles to a red oak then south one hundred and seventy poles to the beginning." The deed was witnessed by William McBride and Imlah Ball.

He appeared on the census in 1830 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. James' household included 2 males 10-14 (Welmoth, Joseph), 1 male 40-49 (James), 2 females under 5 (Lyddia and ?), 3 females 5-9(?, Mariah, Sinthey), 1 female 10-14(Elizabeth), 2 females 15-19(Jincy, Jennet), and 1 female 40-49 (Liddia).

He appeared on the census in 1840 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. James Jr. is listed as James Esq., between the households of Joel Lunceford and Iredell Privett, and has a household consisting of 1 male 20-29 (Welmoth or Joseph), 1 male 50-59 (James), 1 female 5-9 (?), 1 female 10-14 (Lyddia), 2 females 15-19 (Mariah, Sinthey), 1 female 20-29 (Jennet), and 1 female 50-59 (Liddia).

He School census on 27 Oct 1842 in Hunting Creek, Wilkes Co., North Carolina. (40) James Jarvis, Esq. was listed in the census with children Joseph, Mariah, and Sinthy.

He sold land to Randol Maybery on 15 Jan 1845 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. (208) The land lay on the South fork of Hunting Creek "Beginning at a Post Oak thence West sixty two poles to a Post Oak thence South one hundred and sixty six poles to Clark's line thence East sixty two poles to a corner thence North one hundred and sixty six poles to the beginning."

He appeared on the census in 1850 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. James is still living close to Iredell Privett. His household consists of James (61), Liddia (62), Jennet (35), Susan (31), Nelson (5), Abner (4), and Lyddia (1). Susan (Brown) is the wife of James' son Welmoth, and Nelson, Abner, and Lyddia are their children. Welmoth's whereabouts is unknown.

He sold perhaps 340 acres on 28 Feb 1850 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. (209) The land, sold to his son Welmoth for $50, included all the land situated on pipe camp creek belonging to James Jarvis. It is described as "beginning at a pine running west one hundred and thrity four poles to a white oak by a field thence north twenty poles to a post oak thence west one hundred poles to a white oak, thence south crossing said creek one hundred and forty eight poles to a red oak thence east two hundred and thirty poles to a stake on Garrison's line, thence north crossing said creek to the beginning." This is evidently the land purchased from Christopher Monday in 1812 and John Walker in 1823. This significant tract would clearly be worth considerably more than $50, therefore this "sale" appears to be in a means for James, now over 60 years old, to pass on his land to his eldest son.

He appeared on the census in 1860 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. James Sr. is listed at age 71 living with Letty Parker, age 40.

He appeared on the census in 1870 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. James Sr. appears as an 81 year old living with a 49 year old woman, possibly a daughter-in-law (the name is difficult to read, but it is not Letty Parker - the last name is Jarvis and the initials are J. E.). It is possible this is Jennet, with the age somewhat reduced.
