bullet Levi Jarvis was born in 1832 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. (37) He served in the military from 23 Sep 1862 in the 30th Regiment-Infantry. (189)(242) Levi's archive reads "Resided in Wilkes County and enlisted at Camp Holmes at age 32, September 23, 1862, for the war. Present or accounted for until hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia April 1, 1863 with pleurisy. Died in hospital at Richmond on April 20, 1863."

He died on 20 Apr 1863 in Richmond, Henrico Co., Virginia. (243)(244) Following his death in the war, his wife Nancy Roberts then married his brother William. It is unlikely that Levi and Nancy had children; none are listed of the correct age in William's household in 1870.

Parents: John J. Jarvis and Sarah 'Sally' Chambers.

He was married to Nancy Elvira Roberts on 2 Jan 1861 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. (245)

bullet Levy Jarvis was born before 1819 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. (246) He appeared on the census in 1840 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. Levi is known solely from this census. In this census, one of the sons in Levi's age bracket of James Jarvis dissappears and Levi appears with a wife and two daughters under five. Likewise with the family of Charles Jarvis; a male son of the right age disappears from his household between the 1830 and 1840 census. Levi may be a son of Charles.

Parents: James Jarvis and Elizabeth Johnson.

He was married to Sarah about 1835 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. In the 1860 census, a Sarah Jarvis appears which is not directly connected to any of the known Jarvises. Her oldest two children are daughters and would have been in the under 5 bracket in the 1840 census. She has one boy in the 1860 census which should have appeared in 1840, however everything else matches with the listing for Levy Jarvis in 1840. Sarah is therefore assumed to be Levy's wife, and Levy is either dead or in another location in 1860. Sarah is living in the Hunting Creek township.

This family unit is very speculative and may be changed with further information.

Children were: Lydia Jarvis, Elizabeth Jarvis, Jesse Jarvis, Joshua Jarvis, Joseph Jarvis, Rhoda Jarvis, James Jarvis, Joel Jarvis, Mary Jarvis.

bullet Lewis Beal Jarvis was born on 13 Jan 1881.(1) He died in 1959.(1) Parents: William "Thomas" Jarvis and Delilah Spurlin .

bullet Lilly Prudence JARVIS was born on 5 Mar 1875 in North Wilkesboro, Wilkes Co., North Carolina. She died in Sep 1879 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. (168) According to the mortality census, she died of diphtheria. Parents: Rev. Richard Franklin JARVIS and Martha Ann Pardue.

bullet Linda Jarvis was born in Dec 1961 in Maryland.(1) Parents: Elmer Paul Jarvis and Phyllis Breidenstein.

bullet Linda Jarvis Parents: Rufus Clifford Jarvis and Joan.

bullet Lindsey JARVIS was born on 28 Feb 1828 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. (14) He appeared on the census in 1860 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. The census lists Lindsay and Sarah with Mary J. (6) and Dewitt C. (2).

He was given a medical exam on 15 Oct 1864 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. (247) He Served as Justice in Feb 1865 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina.(189) The session in which Lindsay served was the last preceding the surrender of Lee on in April, 1865. He purchased 317 acres on 26 Aug 1869 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. The land was purchased from Lindsey's father-in-law Noah Brown for $5, 000, and was described as bounded by the lands of L.G. Becknall, James Rash, Rebecca Brown Mathers, "beginning at a white oak standing on the south side of Hunting Creek James Brown old beginning corner running west with the old line crossing a large branch three times 206 poles to a black oak thence north three degrees west crossing said creek 192 poles to a white oak corner (down) thence north fifteen degrees east 74 poles to a black oak and a bunch of dogwoods in the old back line then south eighty six and a half degrees east 209 poles to three chestnuts James Brown's old corner then south three degrees west 246 poles crossing Hunting Creek to the beginning containing 317 acres..."

(17), David(? probably Dewitt, age 12), Nancy (12), and William (7). Since she did not appear in the 1860 census in Lindsey's household, Nancy is probably the daughter of Wilie Jarvis and Elizabeth Brown (Lindsay's brother and probably Sarah's sister, who lived next door to them in 1860. Wilie was killed in the civil war.) The household also included a farm hand, A. Williams.

He appeared on the census in 1880 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. The census lists Linsay and Sarah with "Clinton" (22). Clinton is obviously the same person as Dewitt C.

He purchased 25 acres from his brother John N. Jarvis on 2 Aug 1883 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina.(248) The land was described as "Beginning on a White Oak and two Dogwoods. Running North 100 poles to the old James Jarvis line, thence East 144 poles with said line to a Chestnut Lindsey Jarvis corner, thence South with Lindsey Jarvis line to a rock in the old James Brown line Lindsey Jarvis corner, thence West with said line to the beginning."

bullet Lindsey Jarvis was born in 1848.(16) He died before 1873. Lindsey share of his grandmother mother Sarah Jarvis' estate was distributed to George H. Brown, probate judge on behalf of his heirs. This occurred in 1873, indicating that he died before that time. Parents: James Jarvis Jr. and Lyddia Nickelson.

He was married to Matilda Write on 24 Sep 1868. (250)(251) The marriage record actually identifies Lindsey as the son of James and Lydia Jarvis. No bondsman was listed.

Children were: Ida E. Jarvis.

bullet Lindsey Jarvis was born on 6 May 1867 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. (12)(155) He died on 28 Jun 1938.(4) He was buried in Mt. Pisgah Church Cemetery, Wilkes Co., North Carolina.(4) Parents: William M. JARVIS and Nancy Elvira Roberts.

bullet Lindsey Mansfield Jarvis was born on 27 Mar 1874 in Roaring River, Wilkes Co., North Carolina.(252) (3)(253) He purchased 101 acres from Noah T. Jarvis for $1,600 on 24 Dec 1913 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. (15) The land adjoined lands of I. T. Mathis, M.A. Mathis, and others.

bullet Lodemie Lucinda Sara_Elizabeth JARVIS was born on 14 Apr 1866 in Roaring River, Wilkes Co., North Carolina. She Wrote on 12 Apr 1925 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. (7)

"I'm Lodemie Lucindia Sara (Elizabeth) Jarvis (Gilreath), the oldest child of Richard R. Jarvis and Martha Ann Pardue Jarvis, who was the oldest daughter of Bevil Meekins Pardue (born Jan. 18, 1822 and died Dec. 31, 1895), and Prudence Padjett Pardue (b. Mar. 20, 1827, d. Sept. 8, 1888)."

"My grandfather, Meekins Pardue, was of French descent. He came to North Carolina from Virginia. His father was John Pardue and his mother was Elizabeth Godfry. My grandmother, Prudence Pardue, was the youngest daughter of William Padjett, and her mother was Nancy Livingston, of Caldwell County."

"My great-grandfather, William Padjett, was of Scotch descent. When a young man he came from some of the northern states to North Carolina. He settled in Burke County after he married and lived there until grandmother was eight years old. He then bought a large plantation on the Yadkin river above where Roaring River enters the Yadkin, on the north side. He and grandmother lived to a good old age. She was blind five years before her death. He was a teacher and had means. He did not love negroes. He had slaves but could not get one he liked. He kept white men to do most of his work on the farm."

"William Padjett organized the first Sunday School in Burke County. Grandmother said they took dinner and stayed all day. Books were very scarce then. They took Bibles and primers. He would copy notes and in fact all favorite songs to use. I remember seeing some yellow sheets of it in grandmother's trunk. He was a great penman."

"I remember some fine pided stockings he gave my mother. They were the kind he wore with silver knee buckles and slippers. I loved to hear my mother tell about his courting an Indian girl. The old chief, her father, offered him half a bushel of silver to marry her. At first he thought he would, but he would have to marry the third time he went, so he decided it would not be right to marry her unless he could live with her and he was afraid he could not love her enough, although she was beautiful. As he came through the valley of Virginia he stopped at a house to rest and get some food. The man was gone to hunt meat. The woman gave him only a small bit of pone of bread that was on a shelf over the door. They let him stay and rest but would give him only a small but of the bread at a time. They showed him a grave in the yard of a man they gave food to and it killed him."

"In his school when the children would get tired he let them run footraces. His signal to start was to clap his hands and they would run to him. My grandmother was so quick she would most often beat. She was red headed and had some freckles. She was always good to me. She told me after she married when they moved out she had to go home to get materials to make dish cloths as all their cloths were good and she could not use them to make rags. Most all the cloth was made at home then and lasted at least four times as long as cloth we buy now. They used flax and toe to make towels and dish cloths and the like."

"Grandmother Pardue died at the age of sixty-one and is buried at Shady Grove Baptist Church, of which she was a charter member. The church is just east of the home and their home has always been the home of the ministers. Grandpa Pardue married the second time to Polly Kilby, a widow, who survived him. He was seventy-three when he died and was buried by the side of his first wife. "

"My mother was the oldest of ten children. William Franklin Pardue was next. He was a Confederate soldier for a short time. Emily Lucinda married John Childress--they moved to Ashe County; next John Oliver who married Ann Hardin; then Nancy Elizabeth married Huston J. Steelman; James Loyd married Rebecca Boldin; Aneil Thomas - he married Martha Joines; Peter Henry married Mary Smith of Caldwell County; Daniel Joseph married Rosa Ferguson."

"The last of the Pardue family was Birgin Gatch, died of diptheria at the age of twenty-one. I had diptheria at the same time. I had it at the age of thirteen when my brother, Charlie, and sister, Lilly, died with it. They are buried at the Old Place. "

"I, Lodemie Gilreath, am writing this on Easter Sunday, April 12, 1925. I will be fifty-nine years old 14th day of April, 1925."

"My father Richard F. Jarvis was born Nov. 17th, 1895 (sic); was the oldest son of William and Lucinda Kemp Jarvis of Wilkes Co., N.C. My great grandfather's name was John Jarvis; his wife was Sally Chambers. My grandmother Jarvis was Lucinda Kemp, daughter of Esquire and Fanny Kemp, who was Fanny Watts; both lived to be over one hundred years old. One 103 and the other 106. They had fifteen children. Great grandmother Kemp was 53 years old when Joseph, her youngest son, was born. They lived on Iredell and Wilkes County lines. He went to Statesville to buy finery for his daughters. I remember hearing father say his grandfather said he could tie up a hundred dollars worth in a silk handkerchief. He had slaves. He gave all his children a tract of land apiece. My grandfather, William Jarvis, married twice. The second wife was Nancy Roberts - she had five children. Richard, Ransom, Lee, Joseph, John, Alonzo, and Tom. The girls were Lodemie and Sarah Ann."

"My oldest brother, William Felix Jarvis, married Martha Ann Burlow, an orphan girl."

"Sister Clara Eva married G. Thomas McNeil."

"Charley Clinton Jarvis died at nine years of age."

"James Ransom Jarvis married Margaret Keller, of Utah."

"Thomas Bumon Jarvis married Molly Staley."

"Henry Daniel is unmarried."

"Markus Edgar married Myrtle Caudill. He died when his son, Raymond Jarvis was only two week old. "

"My sister, Lilly Prudence, was four years old when she died with typhoid fever; she was between Eva and Jim."

"The last time Grandpa Jarvis came to see us, in the spring before he died, I went home with him, rode behind on a fine gray horse. He was a juror at Wilkesboro court. He was a man that did not talk much but it meant something when he did. His advice was sought in most matters of importance in his neighborhood. What used to be Jarvis Township is now Summers Township as the Summers' got up a secret petition and had it changed to their name."
