grand-daughter Lodemie Jarvis written on 12 April 1925 when she was
about 59 years old. The account was forwarded to the author by
Lodemie's grand-daughter, Virginia Ann Bumgarner. "My father Richard
F. Jarvis was born Nov. 17th, 1895 (sic - the actual date was 1846)
was the oldest son of William and Lucinda Kemp Jarvis of Wilkes
County, N.C. My great grandfather's name was John Jarvis; his wife
was Sally Chambers. My grandmother Jarvis was Lucinda Kemp, daughter
of Esquire and Fanny Kemp, who was Fanny Watts; both lived to be over
a hundred years old. One 103 and the other 106. They had fifteen
children. Great grandmother Kemp was 53 years old when Joseph, her
youngest son, was born. They lived on Iredell and Wilkes County
lines.He went to Statesville to buy finery for his daughters. I
remember hearing father say his grandfather said he could tie up a
hundred dollars worth in a silk handkerchief. He had slaves. He gave
all his children a tract of land apiece. My grandfather, William
Jarvis, married twice. The second wife was Nancy Roberts - she had
five children.

Lucinda was listed in the 1860 census with William, on 19 October 1864
William married Nancy Roberts. William and Nancy have a nine year old
son, Thomas, listed in the 1870 census, which must have been a child
of Lucinda's. Lucinda probably died between 1861 and 1863. Parents: Squire KEMP and Fanny Watts.

William Kemp was born in 1843. He served in the military 30 March 1862 to 1865 in Company E, 54th Regiment - Infantry. William enlisted 4 days after H.C. Jarvis in the same company. Both grew up together in the Jarvis household and probably considered each other to be brothers. Both survived the war.

William's archive record states "Born in Wilkes County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Wilkes County at age 21, March 31, 1862. Reported present or accounted for on surviving company muster rolls through April, 1863. Hospitalized at Stauton, Virginia, July 26, 1863, with fever. Reported absent sick through October, 1863. Hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia, December 4, 1863 with an unspecified wound. Place and date wounded not reported. Furloughed for thirty days on December 5, 1863. Reported absent without leave on September 22, 1864. Reported absent sick in September-October, 1864. Hospitalized at Richmond on December 19, 1864, with an unspecified complaint. Furloughed for sixty days on or about January 26, 1865. Survived the war."
