William BALL was born on 9 Jul 1766 in Virginia.⁽¹⁸⁾ His birth date is known from the family Bible.

He purchased 100 acres on 4 Feb 1812 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. The land was purchased from John Ball, who may be an unknown relative
of William, for $100. No John Ball is documented in the Ball family at
this time. The land lies in the area of William's grant, and is
described as "beginning at a chestnut on James Mchaffey's line then
west fifteen chains crossing of Osborn's creek to a stake on Abel
Nicholson's line then south fifty one chains and twenty two links to a
stake then east twenty two chains and twenty five links to a stake
then north twenty chains to a stake James Mchaffey's line then west
eleven chains and twenty five links to said Mchaffey's corner a post
oak then north thirty one chains twenty two links to the beginning
containing one hundren acres of land more or less on Osborn creek."

He received a grant of 46 acres on 7 Dec 1814 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. The grant is for land on the waters of Osborne's creek. This is
interesting because William's mother is Elisabeth Osborn, probably of
the family who originally settled in the area and whom the creek is
named after. The land is described as "beginning at a pine running
east sixty eight poles to the county line, then north with said line
one hundred eight poles to a post oak in Mahaffey's line, then west
sixty eight poles to a stake, then south to the beginning.

He appeared on the census in 1830 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. William's household in 1830 included 1 male 60-69, 1 female 20-29, and
1 female 50-59.

He appeared on the census in 1840 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina. William's household in the 1840 census consisted of William (70-79),
Sarah (70-79), a female 30-39, and a male 5-9 and two males under 5.
He is living next door to James Jarvis Sr. The 30-39 female may be
either Mary or Sarah with their children.

He died in Jan 1844 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina.⁽¹⁸⁾ A record of the sale of William's affects after his death, on 25 April
1844, has been preserved. The record includes the following:

To James Dobson - 1 lot sundries, 1 foot adze, 1 steel trap.
To William Jarvis - 1 sledge, 1 set wagon boxes, 1 gruge (?), 2
washing tubs
To Larkin Howard - 1 draft cock
To Gideon Johnson - 4 jack plains, 1 anvil
To Iredell Privett - cooper (?) tools, 1 bung box, 1 frow (?), 1 shoe
hammer, 1 hand saw, 1 brace bit and plain bit, 1 scythe, 1 saw
To Muncy Rash - 1 pair stuleyards, 1 malt tub
To Richard Walker - 3 augers, 1 drawing knife
To James Mabry - 1 lot sundries
To S. C. Laws - 2 mortoring plains

The record was signed by William's son Sampson Ball.
A copy of a page from William's bible has been preserved, and was sent
to the compiler by a descendant, Kathlyn Neumann. The notes read as
follows:

"William Ball was born July the 9 Day 1766 and was married to Sarah
Campbell September the 9 Day 1788. The record of their family now as
follows from the first to last.

Imlah Ball was born March the 27 Day 1791
Elizabeth Ball was born March the 10 day 1793
Levi Ball was born January the 15 Day 1795
