| I am researching George Thomas Sloan, born December 3, 1756 in Cork, County Cork, Ireland. George served in the British Navy at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. However, his ship was captured by John Paul Jones off the coast of Barbados. Then, he served with the U.S. Navy and rose to the rank of marine Sargent in the Revolutionary War. Later, he served as a fifer during the War of 1812. George Thomas Sloan died on June 9, 1836 in Laurens County, SC. George Thomas Sloan married Mary Elizabeth Smith on November 20, 1793 in Spartanburg County, SC. Together they produced 12 children. I am descended from the oldest, William Aylmer Sloan. Those children were: William Aylmer Sloan, b. July 20, 1794, Spartanburg Co, SC George Allen Sloan, b. July 20, 1796 in Spartanburg Co. Catherine Sloan, b. December 24, 1798 in Spartanburg Co. Thomas Sanford Sloan, b. October 21, 1800 in Spartanburg Co. Jean Sloan, b. November 7, 1802 in Spartanburg Co. Henry R. Sloan, b. abt. 1804 in Spartanburg Co. Martha "Matilda" Sloan, b. abt. 1805 in Spartanburg Co. Edward Thompson Sloan, b. May 4, 1809 in Spartanburg Co. Richard Ennis Sloan, b. August 2, 1811 in Spartanburg Co. Alfred Sloan, b. August 6, 1813 in Spartanburg Co. Charles S. Sloan, b. abt. 1817 in Spartanburg Co. Mary Ann Sloan, b. abt 1830 in Laurens County, SC I am also trying to find a copy of the following book: "SLOAN AND RELATED FAMILIES, Ancestry of the Sloans who Settled in the Mount Lebanon Baptist Church Community and Surrounding Areas, Greenville County, South Carolina." I will be glad to pay for a copy. I wish to know if anyone knows of any information on the parents or siblings of George Thomas Sloan. I would be interested in knowing the exact location of the Mount Lebanon Baptist Church Community. Is it in the Pacolet, SC area? I am willing to share information. If you find any information to be wrong, let me know. Any help you can provide is appreciated. The Sloan family reunion has been held for the past 35 years in the Community Center (in the old school house across railroad track from main drag through town) in Martin, Georgia every fourth Sunday in July. Bring dishes of food for your family and combine with us from 11:45 am - 2:30 pm. Send me an e-mail to let me know that you are coming. Martin is on highway 17, five miles west of Lavonia, Georgia and 10 miles east of Toccoa, Georgia. |
