The census of 1850 shows his occupation as "innkeeper" (and lists the children shown here). The census of 1830 shows his age as "between 30 and 40", while the census of 1850 shows his age as "50".

Birthyears have been estimated based on subtracting the age listed in the 1850 census from 1850, i.e. Absalom is shown as 17 years old, therefore 1850 minus 17 equals 1833. This same census shows John Tyler Erisman as "Tyler". Harrison and Tyler Erisman were obviously named for two of the most prominent political figures of the times - William Henry Harrison and John Tyler, 9th and 10th Presidents of the United States, both of whom were nominated in Harrisburg, PA in 1836.

John Tyler Erisman was a bugler in the Civil War, 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry, 162nd Regiment, Company F (see "Bates History of Pennsylvania Volunteers", Volume IV, Page 1023). Also listed as belonging to 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry, 22nd Battalion, VRG, Company P, in other documents. Parents: Jacob ERISMAN and Maria SEHNER.
