Obituary:

This week it becomes our sad duty to chronicle the death of another of the pioneers of Elk township. James Henry Ball died at his residence in Peck Monday morning about six o'clock after a lingering illness lastin some months. The deceased has lived in the village for the last eleven years, since retiring from his farm in the Ball settlement and has been a lifelong resident of Elk Township. His industrious habits and sterling charatcter won for him the friendshiip and esteem of his wide circle of acquaintances, and it was wiht hartfelt regret that they crowded the church for his funeral. Mr. Ball was born near Strathroy Ont., Oct. 31, 1852, and at the age of seven yearscame with his parents when theymoved with their family into Sanilac county. they were the earliest settlers into this part of the country and saw it evolve from a silderness of bush and swamp into the beautiful farming country of today.
In February, 1878 he was united in marriage to Rose A. Cowley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Cowley, also early pioneers and residents of Sanilac sounty. To this unioun were born eight children, all of whom are still living, as follows: Mrs. Chas McClelland, Detroit; Mrs. Robert Hesson, Watertown; Mrs. Jos. Hickson, Watertown; Mrs R. R.
