bullet William LEGGORE was born on 28 Dec 1841. He died on 7 Aug 1910. William Leggore was in the Civil War, 191st Regiment, Company F, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Private, entered 13 Sep 1861, captured, discharged 28 Jun 1865

My Grand Aunt Bess Erisman wrote me in a 19 Apr 1979 letter, "I never saw a bow legged Leggore. ALL pigeon toed. It's wonder they didn't trip over their own toes. Sometimes I catch mine turning in. I try to keep them straight."

The following note was received from John Leggore of Norfolk, VA:

Brent,

I finally received the papers back from the National Archives on William Leggore,
Company F of the 191st Regiment of the Pa. Vol. Infantry. It did'nt have that much information available, but I'll give you what I found out. He was 5 ft. 4 1/2 in. tall, fair complexion with blue eyes and dark hair. Listed as a laborer until he enlisted from Middletown in Dauphin County, Pa. at Bristow Station in Virginia on 7 January 1864 for a three year period. No date of birth given, but he was 22 years old went allowed on furlough from 13Mar1865 to 13Apr1865. Rank of Private when captured on August 19th, 1864 at Weldon RailRoad, Va. (near Petersburg). Confined on Aug 20th,1864 at Richmond, sent to Salisbury N.C. on Oct 9, 1864.
The next part of the POW record is a little confusing. I'm not sure what the procedures were in those days on whether a POW was considered part of the enemy army or what, but here is what it states. "Joined the Rebel Army while Prisoner of War at Salisbury N.C. date not given." ... "Paroled at N.E. Ferry N.C. Feb 26-28, 1865. Reported at Camp Parole March 9, 1865. " As you can see from what I've stated earlier, He was given a month's vacation 4 days after receipt at Camp Parole.
Camp Parole was near or at Annapolis. He was only given 2 months pay and apparently had pay stoppage for 1 musket on May 30,65. The only other date on the papers implies that he was discharged on Nov. 2, 1892, which does'nt make sense. I think this date is when the papers were filed in the archives. The copy quality on the paper is very poor. If I ever get a chance, I'll have to go there and see if they will let me look at the originals. If you send me your address, I'll copy and sent to you what I have.
John

Notes on Weldon Railroad: August 18-21, 1864, The Battle of Weldon Railroad, Union troops reached and seized the Weldon Railroad. Siege lines were extended across the tracks. Source: http://www.nps.gov/pete/pe_trge.htm

Corps under command of Maj. Gen. G.K. Warren were withdrawn from the Petersburg entrenchments to operate against the Weldon Railroad. Globe Tavern, Yellow Tavern, Blick's Station Virginia, American Civil War, August 18-21, 1864

While Hancock's command demonstrated north of the James River at Deep Bottom, the Union V Corps and elements of the IX and II Corps under command of Maj. Gen. G.K. Warren were withdrawn from the Petersburg entrenchments to operate against the Weldon Railroad. At dawn August 18, Warren advanced, driving back Confederate pickets until reaching the railroad at Globe Tavern. In the afternoon, Maj. Gen. Henry Heth's division attacked driving Ayres's division back toward the tavern. Both sides entrenched during the night. On August 19, Maj. Gen. William Mahone, whose division had been hastily returned from north of James River, attacked with five infantry brigades, rolling up the right flank of Crawford's division. Heavily reinforced, Warren counterattacked and by nightfall had retaken most of the ground lost during the afternoon's fighting. On the 20th, the Federals laid out and entrenched a strong defensive line covering the Blick House and Globe Tavern and extending east to connect with the main Federal lines at Jerusalem Plank Road. On August 21, Hill probed the new Federal line for weaknesses but could not penetrate the Union defenses. With the fighting at Globe Tavern, Grant succeeded in extending his siege lines to the west and cutting Petersburg's primary rail connection with Wilmington, North Carolina. The Confederates were now forced to off-load rail cars at Stony Creek Station for a 30-mile wagon haul up Boydton Plank Road to reach Petersburg. Confederate general John C.C. Sanders was killed on August 21.

Notes on Camp Parole: By 1863, the barracks at the U. S. Naval Academy and St. John's College had become badly overcrowded, since Annapolis had become the most important depot for paroled prisoners on the coast. As a result, a larger facility named Camp Parole was built outside of Annapolis. At these facilities, Union prisoners paroled from Confederate prisons could get a bath, a shave, fresh clothing, and in some cases badly needed medical attention. The soldiers would then stay at Camp Parole until they could be either sent home or rejoin their regiments. Source: http://www.mdarchives.state.md.us/msa/stagser/s1259/121/7590/html/0000 .html

From Bob, ChiefNepho@aol.com, email of 21 Apr 00: "I have a listing for a William Leggore as a private in Company G, 6th Regiment Pa Reserves with a notation that he reenlisted in the vv. This usually means in the higher numbered regiments which were formed later in the war. The 191st was made up in the field in the Spring of 1864 from members who had time left on their enlistments when their regiments were disbanded and mustered out and they were transferred to other new units."
