Includes NotesNotes for Lilian Alice Horne:
Born in Norwich, the daughter of a tailoress and a railway electrician. Unfortunately her father died when she was barely 2 years old.
The family moved first to Horning and then to Neatishead where with her mother, her elder sister Rose and step sister Ruby, she lived at 2 School Road from 1922.

A short period "in service" for a household in Birmingham proved to be her only excursion (for work) outside the Norfolk County.
Returning to Norfolk, she spent time working for her uncle at a hotel in North Walsham.
The onset of World War II saw the house at Neatishead filled with billeted servicemen and Lily returned home to help her mother cope.
Lily met her husband to be, an RAF serviceman in 1942 at a tea-room in Norwich and after a whirlwind romance they married. A son Stanley was born in 1943.
Unfortunately the marriage did not last and during the late 1940's early 1950's Lily found various work to support herself and her son including housekeeping at Holly Grove Neatishead.

In the mid 1950's Lily obtained a job as a cook at the Petersfield House Hotel in Horning. This proved the turning point. She had found not only a job she enjoyed but was also extremely good at. To the extent that during the 1960's the Readers Digest magazine featured her in one of their cookery articles about local dishes.

Lily continued to cook for the Petersfield until her "semi-retirement" in 1977, her dedication to the job was a byword, in all weathers Lily would insist on travelling from Neatishead to Horning by bike, and if the weather was too bad - by foot. Being knocked down by a car did nothing to dent that determination, as soon as she was able to walk she returned to work.
Ritirement (so-called) meant that she took on various cooking assignments at the Town House, Norwich and for various local households who appreciated her talents.

With the death of her mother in 1976, Lily continued to run the house in School Road and a full time job until eventually creeping old-age encouraged her to move into the sheltered accommodation at Horning.
She continued with her catering work, to the extent that she did her own catering for her 80th birthday party - a party of over 40 persons.

Following a fall in 1996 which resulted in a broken hip, she moved to the Old Vicarage Nursing Home, where her spirit and independence showed through to all. Despite suffering two strokes in the last 2 years, Lily maintained her independent nature until the very last.
